Congressional and Indian Spring have made gestures toward abolishment for this year of their invitation golf events, but the latest developments indicate that the recommendations of the chair- men of the two golf committees have not met with favorable response from the members of the two clubs and both clubs may hold invitation tournaments as they have done in past years. And to make the matter of more cogent in- terest to golf and golfers, another club is thinking of holding an invitation tourney this year. We refer to Beaver Dam out at Landover. Md., which has a splendid 18-hole go'f course and an enthusiastic group of golfers which never has held a big inter-club event. As the situation stands today, it is highly probable that there will be no break in the ranks of the invitation tournaments this year. Such clubs as Chevy Chase, Columbia and Washing- ton, which have held invitation events for more years than most golfers care to admit the have played, stand firmly on their intention to hold their invita- tion events this year as in past years. Only from the newer clubs like Con- gressional and Indian Sp: have the gestures toward temporary al lishment of the tournaments come, and it now appears that they will go through with their tournaments. Mason Would Defer Play. The situation at Congressional is this: Chairman Gugemuon of the tour- nament committee believes there are too ‘many tournaments, they they are a con- siderable burden of expense to the club, and has recommended that Congres- sional defer its invitation event for the Hoover cup this year. This recommen- daticn has met Wwith favor by many of the members, but a group of the younger players, who like to compete in their own club tourney, have objected to its elimination and are in favor of contin- uation of the event. The board of gov- ernors of the club will meet tomorrow afternoon to go_over the matter and ason and Dr. B. L. Taylor, Congres- sional's two delegates to the District Golf Association meeting, will announce the decision of the club at the meeting. Chairman McCarter of the Indian Spring golf committee, who was re- appointed last week for another term, has recommended that Indian Spring abandon its invitation event for this year. But here again opposition has developed to abandonment of the tour- .
