Navigation will use the | ‘Washington half of the channel while the Virginia half of the bascule draw | span is under construction. The Vir- ginia side of the channel is expected to be closed in April. A number of sub- | contractors are at work for the Phoenix Bridge Co., engaged on various parts ot the work. This bascule draw span | 1s said to be one of the few engineering | projects of its kind in this part of the | country. | The first half of the steel is now a]l‘ erected to make the completed “leaf,” as one-half of the draw span is termed. | The total “leaf” weighs about 5,000 | tons, the largest piece of steel weighing | about 30 tons.
