NEW YORK, February 14 (#)—Cot- ton opened steady at an advance of 10 to 14 points today in response to higher Liverpool cables and showed net gains of 17 to 23 points right after the call, with May advancing to 16.18 and Oc- tober to 16.53 on covering and trade buying. Demand tapered off somewhat at these figures, which evidently at- tracted realizing, and there were set- backs of a few points, but the market was fairly steady and about 13 to 18 points net higher at the end of the first half hour. The report of the Census Bureau showing domestic con- sumption of 577,235 bales for January, compared with 453,892 for December and 668,286 for January, 1929, was a shade under the forecast and may have led to some realizing on the early ad- vance. Liverpool cables said there had been covering and trade calling in that market and reported a broadening de- mand for cotton cloths, with an im- proved turnover in yarns. GRAIN MARKET. CHICAGO, February 14 (#).—In- fluenced by downturns in Liverpool quotations and by lack of export de- mand for wheat from North America, wheat values here underwent fresh early setbacks today. Liverpool market was ascribed to cheaper offerings of Argentine wheat and to increasing pressure of unsold Canadian wheat afloat for Europe. future deliveries showed little power to rally. Corn, oats and provisions were also easier, with corn starting % to 3 down, and subsequenily keeping near to_the initial range. for wheat today were reiterated mes- sages to this effect: “Nothing doing in export circles.” Such evidence of per- sistent lack of any substantial outlet, at least temporarily, for wheat from the effective as a market influence because of being in decided contrast with the large foreign demand which many of the closest observers of ‘market condi- tions have predicted was sure to develop owing to shrinkage of wheat yields in important producing countries. One attempted explanation today of cur- tailed transatlantic buying from North America was extra large yields of rye in European countries and importation of new wheat import duties abroad, making_wheat prices relatively exces- sive to European consumers. On the other hand, some encourage- ment for wheat buyers today was found in the fact that show covering for do- mestic Winter wheat has almost com- pletely disappeared everywhere, Under such circumstances any severe drop in temperature would furnish a basis for apprehension of crop damage. How- ever, current advices today represented domestic wheat at present as having generally come through the Winter in good_condition.
