FINANCIAL CURB LIST STEADY DESPITE SELLING Week End Profit Taking Fails to Unsettle Market—Utili- ties Strong. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 8.—The t'url)‘ market closed firm today. Week end | selling pressure was in evidence for a time in the early dealings, but was| readily absorbed, and practically the | entire market turned upward under the | influence of a renewal of operations for the advance in the utility and holding company shares. The Insull stocks displayed outstand- ing strength. Commonwealth Edison shot up nearly 10 points, and Middle ‘West Utilities sold up more than 2, reaching_the best levels of the move- ment. Electric Bond & Share, Allied Power & Light. American Super-Power and United Light higher. American Gas, a recent strong spot, turned heavy in profit-taking, | however, and closed lower. Marine Midland was a strong feature of the holding company issues, rising to a new high for the year at 40. Penn- road also continued its advance, in sympathy with Pennsylvania and other rails on the big board. Canadian Pa- cific new stock, which was admitted to trading on the produce exchange on announcement of the 4-for-1 split yes- terday, selling around 55, was admitted to trading on the curb today and sold up_close to 60. ‘The natural gas stocks steadied, but | falled to make much progress. Oils | turned heavy, Gulf losing about 2 and | Vacuum 1 int. mont moved up a couple of points. Glen Alden Coal slipped back about 2 points. Industrials were largely dull. Otis Ele- vator new stock was in fair demmd. INVESTMENT RAIL BONDS SHOW GAINS Utilities Fairly Active, but Indus-| trial List Remains Quiet—U. S, Group Firm. By the Associated Pres NEW YORK, February 8—Invest- ment rails made progress in today's Bond market The volume of trading was fairly active for a Saturday ses- sion. Atchison general 4s, Baltimore | & Ohio refunding 5s, New York Cen-| tral 3158 and Pennsylvania gold 5s im- proved fractionally. Southern Railway general 4s, however, sold off a point on_the opening transaction. The new American Telephone 5s as- serted their usual leadership in the utility group, trading actively at around 101. Industrials were quiet. Convertibles, rather dull, moved ir- regularly, although there was a better ton: to the rails in sympathy with the movement of stocks in this group. United States Governments were very firm and several small advances ap- peared. CHAIN STORES HELD BENEFIT TO PUBLIC| Maryland U. Economist Declares Competition Will Prevent Dan- gerous Monopoly. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, February 8.—Prof. S. H. De Vault, head of the department of agricultural economics, at the Uni- versity of Maryland, was one of the 45 university economists in the coun- try asked for their opinion of the chain | store system of merchandising. Of the 45 professors invited to express their views, the 43 who responded were \ pncucnlly unanimous in their answer | to the three questions submitted. The questions were: (1) Is the chain store system a detriment or a benefit to the public? (2) Is it probable the chain store will become a dangerous mon- olopy? (3) Is the quality of goods sold by the average chain store what it is Tepresented to be? Prof. De Vault's reply to the ques- tionaire follows: | “I think the chain store is a benefit | to the American public. It has helped to standardize goods, has meant lower ices to the consumer, has tended to prove the business methods of mer- chants. has encouraged cash payments. “I do not believe chain stores will | become a dangerous monolgpy. At least, for a long time to come’ there will be | sufficient competition among chains. “I belleve chain stores, within recent years, hzve tended to improve the qual- ny of the goods sold; or, in other words, carrying better quality goods. ‘So far as the farmers of America are concerned, they will have to organ- ize to do business with chain stores. ‘What is needed is big business at both ends; that is, organization of producers | to do business with the organized sell- ing units of Lhe mrms WEEKI.Y CLEARINGS NEW YORK, February 8 (#).—Clear- ing house statement: Exchanges, $1,097. DANVILLE TO-BACCO MART TO CLOSE FEBRUARY 28 DANVILLE, Va., February 8.—At a meeting of the sales committee of the Danville Tobacco Association, it was decided to bring the local tobacco mar- ket season to & close on February 28. Already nearly 2,000,000 pounds more of weed have been sold to date than last year, and while the sales are drop- ping off ‘considerably, much tobacco of inferior t; is being marketed, this causing a slump in price averages. Lit- tle more tobacco of good quality is expected. To date a total of 47,772,996 pounds of weed has been sold for $8,765,511.43, an average of $18.35 per 100 pounds. For the season last year 45,1859008 pounds were sold for $8462,175.73, the average being $18.65. The closing of the market on this day is in line with the association’s policy of not dragging the season on when the crop has been practically marketed and when ample time has been allowed for even tardy sellers to put their leaf on the market. ‘WESTERN UNION. In addition, it was predicted that the annual dividend rate on the split-up shares will be equal to about $10 a share on the present stock, compared with the current rate of 35 which has been paid since 1926.
