Looking forward to a continuation of | the rapid expansion now going on in the telephone industry, the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. has planned additions and improvements for 1930 in Maryland and Virginia involving gross expenditures of $14,182,000. Among the major projects contem- plated under this program for Maryland are outside plant, including exchange and toll facilities throughout the State, $2,656,000; additions and improvements to central office equipment, $1,613,000: telephone equipment and private branch | exchange switchboards on subscribers’ premises, $1,557,000. New buildings and additions to present buildings are con- templated for several sections of the Gtate. Maryland Program. ‘The Maryland outside plant program includes for specific projects additional toll cable and circuits in many sections of the State, involving expenditures of $116,000; pole replacements, $212,000, and general improvements, $156,000. Additional facilities to be provided at Baltimore are estimated to cost 3861£ ck, $39,000; Hagerstown, $33,00 Hyattsville, $19,000; Poolesville, $17,00 Crisfield, $16,000; Dundalk, $14,000; Easton, $12,000; Princess Anne, $10,000, and Silver Spring, Catonsville, Pikes- ville, Sparrows Point and Chevy Chase combined, $40,000. Miscellaneous proj- ects for providing additional facilities in smaller communities throughout the State will involve expenditures of $90.000. The principal Virginia projects con- templated under this program are ad- ditions and improvements to central office equipment involving expenditures of $2,543,000; telephone equipment and private branch exchange switchboards on the subscribers’ premises throughout the State, $1,229,000; outside plant, in- cluding exchange and toll facilities, $1,- 864,000, and new buildings and addi- tions, $418,000. Included in the central office addi- tions and improvements are the com- pletion of the dial system installation in Richmond and the installation of a complete new toll switchboard and telephone repeaters for improving | transmission on toll calls, $2.204,400; additional dial and other equipment at Norfolk, $71,000; additions and improve- ments in the Suffolk central office, $63,000; Hampton, $54,000; Roanoke, 37,000; Alexandria, $21,000; Clarendon, $37, $15,0( Lynchburg, $19,000; Norton, $11,4 and Newport News, $8,000. Cities to Benefit. Among the cities where additional outside subscribers’ facilities will be made available are Richmond, where such improvements are estimated to cost $116,000; Norfolk, $86,000; New- port News, $54,000; Roanoke, $45,000; Onancock, $24,000; Alexandria, $17,000; Portsmouth, $15,000; Cape Charles, $12,000, and Hampton, $9,000. CABINET CONGRATULATES | TARDIEU AND BRIAND | Detailed Explanation of Attitude | on Naval Parley Questions Is Given Paris. By the Associated Press. PARIS, February 4.—Premier Ta dieu and Foreign Minister Briand yes terday gave a detailed explanation to the cabinet of their attitude at the Lon- don Naval Conference on various ques- tions and their policy for future de- liberations. The cabinet unanimously congratulated them. Premier Tardieu outlined the French compromise formula for measuring and classifying navies, which has been adopted as a basis of discussion at the London Conference. This formula es- timates the total tonnage of all war- ships and then classifies the ships into various types. [Each category has a specified total tonnage, with the privi- lege of transfer from one type of war- ship to another within a percentage to be upon. The French are under- stood to see in this method of work a linking of the Naval Conference with | the future disarmament negotiations to be held at Geneva. Autoist Blocking Police Fined.
