’, WETS STRENGTH DECLARED FALING ‘W. C. T. U. Head Says Only| 108 of 531 Legislators Are Against Prohibition. Br the Associated Press. CHICAGO, February 4—Mrs. Ella A | Rool, national president of the Wom- | an’s Christian Temperance Union, de- | clared in a letter Sunday that the wets responsible for the “noise” in the present prohibition controversy in Con- gress can claim only about one-fifth the membership of both houses, ‘The opponents of prohibition have dwindled. she set out, until of the 531 national legislators they number only 108, and a fifth of these come from New York City. . “Underneath the noise,” Mrs. Bool stated, “the Hoover administration, dry and determined to carry out enforce- ment of the eighteenth amendment, is moving ahead effectively. The Presi- dent’s Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement will remove much of the interfering legal rubbish. Court congestion will be relieved and crimi- nals will have less chance of escape through delay and technicality. “State and local enforcement must be strengthened. Too much civic ap- athy is attached to local enforcement, but State enforcement codes in the main are stronger than the national prohibition act. Opponents of prohibi- tion have no program and have offered no_remedy.” The letter was addressed to State presidents of the organization. SHIPPING NEWS Arrivals at and Sailings From New York.
