Social Plans at White House Tentative While First Lady Vice President to Be White House Guest—De- | parting British Envoy Entertained—Other Special Society Events. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HE close of a week of stirring social events but marks the opening of another still more crowded perod, with at homes and visiting occupying the daylight hours and the evenings given over to dinner parties and dances. Thursday night the President and Mrs. Hoover will give a dinner in honor of the Vice] President, but other plans at the White House will remain tentative | until the First Lady of the Land entirely recovers from the heavy oold and fatigue contracted at the opening of the new year. | | TEI Vice President’s social calendar is almost overflowing, while his sister, Mrs. Gann, is dividing her time between things official | and informal engagements with her old Washington friends. Mrs. Jacob Leander Loose will entertain the Vice President at dinner tomorrow night preceding the bachelors’ cotillon, and Tuesday eve- ning he will the guest of Senator and Mrs. McNary. Among other important dinners for the Vice President is that to be given by Sen- ator and Mrs. Deneen January 28, while early in February he will be the guest of the Ambassador of France and Mme. Claudel. IR ESME and Lady Isabella Howard's social calendar grows daily as the time for their departure from Washington approaches, and when they are nct guests they will be hosts in the gloomy old em- bassy, where they have given to Washington the most brilliant and popular social reign it has ever knewn. Tuesday night they will dine with the Ambassador of France and Mme. Claudel, and the night of January 22 they will be guests in New York of Mrs. Whitelaw Reid. e s g | RIGHT royally were the guests of the Ambassador of Italy and | Nobil Donna Antoinette de Martino treated at the receptlon] and ball given at the embassy to celebrate the wedding day in Brus- sels of her foyal highness, Princess Jose of Belgium, and his royal highness, the Prince of Piedmonte, of Italy last week. In remembrance of the event the woman guests received royal blue leather card cases, richly embossed in gold and bearing the royal crest, while the men carried away-with them similar gifts, but in the form of cigarette | cases. Thousands of pink.roses and other flowers lent a Springtime | charm to the embassy, and the guests, including hoary-headed men and women and debutantes and their dancing partners, danced into the morning hours. Debutantes distributed the souvenirs. The Ambassador of Belgium, his highness, Prince Albert de Ligne, gave a dinner earlier that evening, when the young royal lovers were toasted, the guests later going to the Italian embassy. F' ALL the coming events this month, the Bal Boheme, an annual frolic given by the Arts Club of Washington, stands out supreme. It is Washington's one great event when' artists, writers and society | folk meet for a brilllant revel of pageantry and dancing, and for the first time a woman heads the ball committee as chairman. This is Mrs. John O. Johnson, who is carrying the event to a brilliant climax for the night of January 27, when not only the entire ball room floor of the Willard Hotel will be used, but dozens of dinner parties are being planned to precede the ball. PARTICULARLY graceful act and one which shows the interest, of the business and professional men and women of Washington | in the Arts Club and its big annual frolic is the courtesy of the direc- tors of the Community Chest in changing the date for their campaign dinner to January 28, the night after the Bal Boheme, so the dates will not conflict. The Community Chest campaign dinner will have} Rundreds of important men and women as guests and would mate- rially have interfered with the ball. PARTXCULARLY artistic and delightful will be the entertainment given under the auspices of the Colonial Dames of America the afternoon and evening of Wednesday at the Carlton Hotel patio for | the benefit of the restoration fund of Washington's headquarter’s at ‘Williamstown, Va. Sponsoring the event are Mme. Debuchi, Mme. Ferrara and Mrs. James J. Davis, and many cthers are working under the direction of Mrs. Walter R Tuckerman to make the benefit | interesting and brilliant. | vy Senate Ladies’ Club To Meet Tuesday, 1 P.M.
