| ANERCAN LFE STIDYT0 BE MADE President Appoints Commit- tee for Exhaustive Sur- vey of Conditions. By the Assoclated Press. To determine the striking changes that modern influences have wrought in American life, President Hoover has azpctnted a committee of noted soclolo- gists and given to it the task of con- ducting an exhaustive survey. Such questions as the effect of city life upon mental and physical health, changes in family life, problems arising from increased leisure and a host of kindred subjects will furnish material for = minute scientific research that is expected to require two or three years for_completion. The purpose of the survey is the pro- duction of “a body of systematic fact about social problems, hitherto inacces- sible, that will be of fundamental and permanent value to all students and workers in the field of social science.” W. C. Mitchell Head. At the head of the survey the Presi- dent has placed Wesley C. Mitchell of Columbia University. Other members of the committee are Charles E. Mer- riam, political science professor at the ‘University of Chicago; William F. Og- burn, professor of sociology in the Uni- versity of Chicago; Howard W. Odum, professor of sociology at the ‘University of North Carolina, and Shelby M. Har- rison of the Russell Sage Foundation. The cost of the investigation will be porne by the Rockefeller Foundation. In announcing the appointment of the committee, the White House said that important preliminary work had been done by the Social Sclence Research Council. Survey Scope Outlined. . The scope of the survey was out- lined as follows: “Such subjects will be studied as the improvement of national health and vitality, its bearing upon increased number. of persons of old age and other results; the changes in maladjusted, such as insane, feeble-minded, etc.; the effect of urban life upon mental and P 1 health; the institutional de- velopment to meet these changes; the problems arising from increased leisure; changes in recreation and the provision for it; the changes in occupations; oc- cupations likely to continue to diminish in importance; those likely to increase; the cg:nzes in family life; in housing; in education; the effect of inventions upon the life of the people, and many others which may indicate trends which are of importance.” .
