12 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. D. C. FRIDAY. DECEMBER 20, 1929. TRADING IMPROVES AT D. C. MARKET Colder Weather Brings Influx of Buyers—Tree Sales Large. t ‘This morning’s colder weather put a little life in trading in the wholesale district. It was not cold enough to frost fruits and vegetables stored along the farmers’ line or in front of commis- sion houses, however, dealers having paid attention to weather predictions and given addec protection to the com- modities. V/holesalers fully appreciated the change in the weather as an aid to the poultry market, dressed stock always showing to much better advantage in cold weather. Truckloads of live tur- keys, chickens, ducks and other varieties of poultry were very much in evidence this morning. ‘Turkeys were quoted at 39 cents by some retail stores and at flightly higher prices by others, Dressed Stock. “But with the colder weather this morning.” observed a dealer, “dressing in the country should begin in earnest, and much of the stock dressed today should reach here tomorrow or Sun- .day.” was reported among wholesalers this morning that raisers in the Nor- thern Neck of Virginia are being advised to hold back supplies of turkeys for higher prices, persons giving the advice believing prices will be higher after the close of the Christmas holiday season. “I don't think much of the advice, said a wholesaler this morning, ‘“for there seldom is much of a demand afier Christmas. Some few turkeys are sold for the New Year celebrations, but such sales usually are to hotel and restau- rant proprietors.” It is reasonably certain that Sunday’s receipts will be fairly heavy, according to merchants, necessitating the keeping open of business houses during the en- tire day. Trading in Christmas trees and greens for decorative purposes was reported ac- tive this morning. Dealers reported supplies very heavy and more attrac- tive than usual. The more attractive trees and holly were reported in great- est demand at advanced prices, Municipal Fish Market dealers this morning reported the usual demand for marine products, the colder weather having made it possible for them w|s|usa.§o; bushel 1 make more attractive displays of re- ceipts. Colder weather also increased the demand for oysters, prices being |U. S. slightly higher than usual. Fish Supplies. There were ample supplies of all va- rieties of fish from the North and South, Potomac River netters contributing sup- Plics of several varicties of fish, chiefly pereh, catfish and carp. Two varietics of crabmeat offered this morning sold at 70 and 90 cents a pound, the demand for the meat being fairly good. A continued firm but irregular condi- tion of the egg market was reported, prices continuing unchanged. Butter prices advanced a iraction of a cent a pound. the advance not being great enough to affect the retail market. Fruit and vegetable supplies for the holiday trade continue heavy and prices | of most varleties, according to dealers, are cheap. A feature of the business on the farmers' line and commission house district was the glutting of the market with parsnips from nearby farms. They sold as low as 25 cents for two-peck baskets. Meat prices continued practically un- changed, business being as brisk as dealers expect so near the holiday sea- son. Prices of most commodities this morning were substantially the same as those quoted yesterday. Today's Wholesale Prices Prices Slightly Butter—One-pound S tub, 40ad1; store-packed, 30a32.
