Several speakers, including District Commissioner Proctor L. Dougherty, will participate tonight in exercises arranged | by the Columbia Heights Business Men's | Association to mark the lighting of | Santa Claus Lane, the flluminated half- mile of Fourteenth street. Dougherty will light a 30-foot com- munity Christmas tree at Fourteenth and Kenyon streets. He will be intro- duced by B. A. Levitan, president of the business men’s organization. Invocation will be offered by Rev. Harvey Baker! Smith, pastor of the Columbia Heights Christian Church. A program of com- munity singing will be led by Roy Carty. ‘The Santa Claus Lane now includes 1,100 colored lights and 150 Christmas trees. The chain will remain flluminated until New Year eve. ¥ Among the special guests will be Maj D. A. Davison, assistant engineer com- missioner; Maj. Henry G. Davis, former pastor of the Pirst Baptist Church of Erick, Okla., was on trial here today on a statutory charge gre!zrred on complaint of Maxey Merle Stayton, 17, one of his former ‘parishioners. Two witnesses, the young woman, who alleged that she was attacked on several occasions while a guest in 1928 of the minister and his wife at the pas- torate, and her mother, testified yester- day. Soon after the girl had accused Davis this Spring he fled to California. He was arrested there at Sunnyvale and returned to Sayre, where he has been confined in the county jail in default of $15,000 bond. Esther Case Found Dead of Gas in | Apartment. | NEW YORK, December 20 (#).—Miss ‘Esther Case, a radio singer and a former opera siyzer in Europe, was found dead of gas poisoning last night in her apart- ment. A tube connected with an open gas jet was found near her body and police listed the death as a suicide. Miss Case was about 40 years old.
