Capital Eagerly Awaiting Renewal of Social Program - Following Period of Quiet Rush for Dates Anticipated at Close of Mournin¢ Period—Special Events Now Entered in Ca]cndar. BY SALLIE V. T H. PICKETT. HE official program in the first season of an administration is always looked forward to with far greater interest than those of the remaining three years, and with the lifting of officlal mourning December 18 there will be a veritable rush of an- nouncements in an effort to secure new dates for the events ean- celed out of respect to the President’s decree. President and Mrs. Hoover, who are maintaining the period of mourning rigidly, will entertain at an official dinner at the ‘White House the evening of December 18, and two days later they will be guests at dinner of the Secretary of State and Mrs. Stimson, the first of the series of cabinet dinners of this administration. FI:RST of the diplomats’ dinner parties in honor of the Vice President will be that of the Ambassador of Cuba and Senora de Ferrara Thursday evening, December 19, which starts a particularly lntexut—' ing series of parties where conversation is at its best. A diplomats party, but of an entirely different nature, is the reception w! ch the Ambassador of Chile and Senora de Davila will give on the same day for Miss Junia Culbertson, debutante daughter of the United States Ambassador to Chile and Mrs. Culbertson, when the guests will be drawn largely from the younger set, and there will be @ancing. EXCEPT for some of the more staid members, society will fairly dance its way through the season, starting with tomorrow night, when the first bachelors’ cotillion of the season will take place in the ball room at the Mayflower with the very essence of good society on the dance floor, continuing on through a long series of dances, in- cluding some sprightly dances of the Junior Bachelors’ Club, made up of men of more tender years than those of the bachelors’ cotillion set. THIS club has in it many of the sons of fathers who were the chief dancing partners at fashionable events in their generation, and now their very own cotillion will give its first dance at the Mayflower. January 10. The Junior Bachelors’ Club will have only one cotillion figure at each dance and that will be the opening feature. Mrs. Richard Henry Lynn is making arrangements for the young bachelors and the floor committee of 30 members will skim the cream of old ‘Washington society for its recruits, though there are some men from official ranks on the list. Members of the executive committee in- clude Mr. William Jardine, Mr. Fontaine Bradley, Mr. Page Hufty, Mr. Bowman MacArthur, Mr. Oliver Walker, Mr. Prescott Gatley, jr.; Mr. Fulton Lewis and others. UITE the most important bringing together of society last week Q was at the Wednesday morning musicale, when the' Executive family, the diplomatic corps and the cream of society and the music world were present. These events possess a charm and informality that would be lacking at any time, but in the morning hours when the third musicale is given Wednesday, December 18, the official mourning period will have expired and the luncheon parties which follow the program will be many and brilliant. Army-Navy Service Men To Share Honors at Ball Midshipmen from Annapolis and cadets from West Point will share honors at a Christmas night ball at the Mayflower Hotel, which judging from past seasons will be a particularly brilliant and well attended event. This is the ball particularly arranged for the embryo service men, and there is &n attractive floor committee of girls, one for eflc?h brAanch l‘i's’t the service. Those on the Army are: . Miss Mary I Henry, chairman; Miss Jane Crosby, vice chairman, and Miss Anne Virginia Ashburn, Miss Kathleen Berry, iss Virginia Cheatham, Miss Katharine Fechet, Miss Dorothy Grier, Miss Frances Herr, Miss Susie Lane Hoyle, Miss Lilla La Garde, Miss Jean McDonald, Miss Janet Murray, Miss Isabelle Park, Miss Sally Phinney, Miss Frances Simonds and Miss Marjorie Simonds. “ On the Navy list are’ Miss Engracia Freyer, chairman; Miss Elvira Johnson, vice chairman, and Miss Neville Gherardi, Miss Mary Jacobs, Miss Elizabeth Kennedy, Miss Susan Kintner, Miss Polly Larimer, Miss Frances Morse, Miss Mildred Ramsay, Miss Caroline Sanderson, Miss Helen Strauss, Miss Anita Tarrant and Miss Ruth Tarrant.
