THE SEASON’S WAR BOOKS (Continued From Fourth Page) 1 assure you that this is a very active and stirring adventure—this go- ing through Germany with Mr. New- man by way of the latest of his famous | || any. * x o % THE ROGUE'S MOON. By Robert W. || Chambers, author of “The Man They | |/ Hanged,"ete. Ilustrated by Norman ||| Price, New Yerk: D. Appleton & Co. IKE stories of pirates? Here they| || are—the adventures of all the || scandalous buccancers from 1690 on down to the present, where nowadays the methods are so unpicturesque as to| | make the men themselves not worth recording. These are pirates as they should be, ranging from South Carolina all up and down the coast, which was made for such free-booters—islands without number, inlets as many for the reaching of these inlet hiding places, shallow waters and easy land- ings. The old days were fine days for | Black-Beard and Ned Low and Francis n Sprigg and a host of others, to say nothing of the girl pirates, Mary Read and ‘Anne Bonney, as lusty sea- Tobbers as the men themselves. Chap- ter by chapter Mr. Chambers, with history back of him, gives the thrilling adven! of these coast rangers. One of them all of us were brought up on— the most daring and audicious of them all, William Kidd. A few years ago, researching around, Robert Chambers came upon a perfectly good clue as to the real innocence of William Kidd. Interested—indeed, rather obsessed by this idea of still another miscarriage f justice—the popular romancer hunted down the facts. These, put into shape, became one of the most absorbing of the Chambers novels. “The Man They HManged"—Willlam Kidd, innocent. It was this pursuit, possibly, that so whet- ted this writer's taste for pirates. At any rate. here they are, a dozen or|ll|l more, all set eut in their brutal law- lessness or in their sheer love of daring, with the easy story-telling swing of || 0 Mr. Chambers. A ‘beautiful beol look at, to handle. No little part of the || || beauty comes from the pictures. Nor- || man Price feels just how the pirate ||| should loek, and he makes him look i exactly that way. Is this a book for children? T don't know. Sounds quite ‘ grown up to me. * ¥ ¥ * THE DRAGON OF LUNG WANG. By i Maric on Harvey, author of “The Vengeance of the Ivory Skull” etc. ||| New York: Edward J. Clode, Ine.
