SAPE’I’Y methods of the Bureau of Mines, which for many years have been earnestly advocated by the bureau’s experts, are be- ginning to bear fruit. The report of the past fiscal year shows that the total of deaths from mine fatalities was only 139, considerably less than the 342 of the previous year. Strange as it may seem, electricity, which has gone so far to cut the loss of life, was the most potent cource of death in the mine fatalities of the year. Out of the 38 explo- sions of the year, 18 were caused by electricity and 93 of the deaths so resulted. Open lights and smoking caused 11 explosions, with 14 deaths, and explosives caused 8 explosions with a loss of 26 lives. One blast claiming 6 lives was caused either by an opzn light, an electric arc or a spark. The explosions in closed-light mines were greater, but the very fact that closed or elec- tric lights were used is a partial explanation of the reason for the figures against electricity. 31. What the casualties might have been had open lights been used can not be estimated, of course, but they would probably have been much greater. The chances are that the total casualties would have been 428 greater if rock-dusting had not been employed as a safety measure in many of the mines in which explosions occurred. Thirteen of the mines having ex- plosions were rock-dusted in part, and in six of these rock-dust served to localize the blasts, while, in place of 62 who actually were killed, it is very likely that the 428 who escaped would also have met death. Human carelessness plays the greatest part in the explosions, for a study of the various blasts indicates that they occurred during the hours when the shifts were changing. News re- ports of these disasters so often contain the statement that the casualties would have been heavier had, not the force just left the mine and only a few stragglers been caught, or, con=- versely, the shift had just come on when the blast occurred and the full force was under- ground. The bureau, having made much headway in its campaign to convince the mine owners, is now turning to the men themselves in an effort to bring about. a proper concern for safety measures and the elimination of care- lessness. Best Size for Coke. ITH Winter at hand, the Bureau of Mines steps forward with information for those who burn coke in their furnaces. The bureau has conducted exhaustive tests to find which size is best adapted to domestic use. It was found that a size greater than that which would pass through a three-inch screen was imprac- ticable, while the smaller size from half an inch to an inch was too small without exceed= ingly good drafts, For general, all-around sate isfaction, the bureau believes that a one-and-a= half tnch screen produces the best siza.
