Inclusion of the National Capital on the proposed Southern transcontinental airmail route was urged by a special committee of the Washington Chamber of Commerce at the close of a hear- ing by the interdepartmental commit- tee on airways yesterday afternoon in the Post Office Department. Appearing as the last speaker before the committee in an all-day session, Dorsey W. Hyde, speaking for the com- mittee of the local trade organization, said that the National Capital is in- terested especially in the opening of a transcontinental route connecting with the present coastal airmail route at Atlanta, thus giving the National Cap- ital direct airmail connection with the | South and West. McAdoo Visions Future. + Willlam G. McAdoo, former Secretary | of the Treasury and chairman of the , board of Southern Skylines, upon whose | proposal for a new transcontinental | Toute at greatly reduced rates yester- day's hearing was held, disclosed that the ultimate social effects of aeronau- tics upon the American people will be more profound than even the exagger- ated conception the most optimistic now may have. Because of its tremendous potential benefit to the people as a whole, he declared, the Government is Jjustified in using every means of stim- ulating the growth of air transporta- tion. Aviation, in common with other in- dustries, he said, now is suffering from the financial depression attendant upon the stock market collapse. As a result, he continued, stimulation by the Gov- ernment of the aviation industry at present is in the nature of a public Necessity, not only that the industry may not be crippled, but as & means of building up national defense. Detailed Brief Submitted. ‘Mr. McAdoo and James C. Edgerton, vice president and operations manager of Southern Skylines, presented to the committee a detailed brief in support of their proposal to carry the airmail over the Scuthern transcontinental route at rates which not only would enable the Post Office Department to wipe out the airmail deficit as far as that line is con- ¢erned, but to make a small profit. ‘The committee which presented the National Capital’s plea for a place on the proposed route was headed by Lieut. Walter Hinton, chairman, and Creed V. Fulton. vice chairman, of the aviation committee of the Washington Chambex of Commerce. Following the hearing, which-was the largest airmail hearing yet conducted by the interdepartmental committee, the groposll was taken under consideration )y the committee, which will announce its decision later. More than 30 members of the Senate and House appeared before the com- mittee during the day in support of the proposed extension of airmail service The Hub will allow you $30.00 for your old Living Room, Dinifig Room or Bedroom Suite toward the pur« chase of a new one.
