DOHENY ACQURES FALL RANGHLAND | Apbreclosure Followed by Sale to Satisfy Note Given 0il Man. By the Assoclated Press. ALAMOGORDO, N. Mex., November 19.—The far-flung lands of the Tres Ritos Ranch, once the pride of Albert B. Fall, former Secretary of the In- terior, today were the property of Ed- ward L. Doheny, oil magnate. An action described as an untangling | of the affairs of the Tres Ritos Land | Co. resulted in Doheny’s acquisition of | the ranch at a special master’s sale yes- terday. Representatives of Doheny paid $132461.81 for the Tres Ritos. | Under an order of the Third District Court, following mortgage foreclosure | action, the sale was made to satisfy a | note given to the oil man on December | 20, 1928, for $124,000 at 6 per cent in-| terest, The note covered a personal mortgage held by Doheny. | Note Signed by Wife. | Sighed by Emma Fall, wife of the | formef Interior Secretary, as vice pres- | ident pf the Tres Ritos Land and Cattle | Co., the note held by Doheny was in- dorsed by Fall. It could not be learned | here, however, just what connection the | note hore to the private affairs of Fall, | nor was it evident why the note was given Doheny. | Fall, in broken health, is in El Paso, | ‘Tex. He is under conviction for bribery in connection with his acceptance of a $100,000 loan from Doheny. That loan was made in 1921, when Fall was Sec- retary of the Interior. Representatives of Doheny and Fail, ‘who consummated the deal here yester- day, pointed out the transaction was a mere formality with the view of keeping the affairs of the land company legally straight. Residence Is Retained. They reiterated Doheny has specified Fall may have his residence on the ranch and a part of the property as long a8 he cares to live on it. Last July mortgage foreclosure papers were filed here by Doheny’s attorneys and the District Court gave the Tres Ritos Land Co. 30 days in which to reply. On August 15 the court ordered the land sold at public auction to sat- isfy the note held by Doheny. Sale was accomplished when Doheny’s attorneys bid in the property. No other bidders appeared. AMUSEMENTS BELASCO—“Death Takes a Holiday.” Demonstration by Death, “in per- son,” that “he” may have compassion in rtal affairs, produces the big thrill in the play at the Belasco Thea- ter this week. It is by no means the only thrill to be found in “Death Takes & Holiday,” but it comes at the end of the longest period of suspense that the stage has yet produced. Call it “fantasy,” in the terms ot the printed program, but it is no gen- tle excursion into the realms of fancy— Just a new kind of drama, in whicn one forgets that Death has a st! and sits tense while watching the real emotions of the well known associate architect of human destiny. So fasci- nating does the story become that, when the final curtain is reached a busy audience forgets its wraps and the location of the various exits ot the auditorium, and calls and calls for the members of an all-round cast ot layers tq repeat their bows with smiles | at wreathe. | It may be realized that Death 1s out of place in pleasant social affairs, but an accustomed role of sorrow- making is forgotten, while the auditor weaves a mantle of good will for a charming figure of passionate love, be- nevolence and final heroism. Almost ular is a search for companion- ip; this human representation of an immortal force becomes a dramatic character in an unusual plot. No one ever attracted more sympathetic at- tention than does .this foe of lite, masquerading for three days as & human being. Perhaps it is the fine acting and st wart physique of Philip Merivale, as- sisted by some actors of distinction, that ives force to the brief adventures of ath in the flesh. It is undeniable that the imaginative personification of family woe, never a welcome guest in real life, dominates a series of enter- taining stage pictures, strung upon the thread of a consistent plot. . Frank Stockton, while a resident of the Shenandoah Valley, once wrote of the Grand Vizier who had lived so long that he brought to each succgeding neration the accumulated wisdom of e ages, and simflarly the successful play, “The Servant in the House,” gave 'NA NG LIFE a conception of supreme wisdom. There is something in the author’s creation of the leading character of this present work which suggests such masterful personalities. Walter Ferris, dramatist, bhas based it on the Itallan drama by Alberto Casella. With a sln‘)e artistic stage setting in the great hall of a castle, the action proceeds from the moment of the ar- rival of Death on his holiday to the strong climax in which a terror-strickén group awaits the decision as to whether he will take with him into eternity the | highly imaginative and emotional youn woman who has become the object o his love. Among the lighter moments of the drama are those in which youthful qualities are restored to persons who are thus profiting, by the abnormal ef- | fects of a whimsical holiday, from the | task of leading the way to the grave. In these scenes much of the effect of the production is due to the talented company which has been assembled by the Professional Players for the support of Mr. Merivale. James Dale as Duke Lambert, involuntary host to the celes- tia! visitor, gives a strong portrayal of the character and contributes to the presentation of the drama. Katherine Hepburn as Grazia, loved by Death, achieves a distinctive piece of acting in a role which calls for sustained emo- tion and representation of character which exists in the atmosphere of de- votion to ideal spiritual thoughts. It is abnormal, as the plot demands, and for that reason is outstanding. There is no weak spot in the cast, which includes also Olga Birkbeck, Ann Orr. Viva Birkett, Wallace Erskine, Lorna Lawrence, Roland Bottomley, Martin Burton, Frank Greene, Folrence Golderr and Thomas Bate. D.C.C. Detectives Watch Roads. NOME, Alaska, November 19.—Prepa- rations for an acrial expedition to go to| the aid of Carl Ben Elelson, noted Arc-| tic aviator whose wrecked plane was re- rted seen on the ice-bound coast of iberia nine days ago, were being made at Tiler, Alaska, today by his com- panion fiyer, Frank Dorbramdt. ‘Word that the wreckage of Eielson's | piane had been sighted 60 miles from the icebound fur-trading shlg Nanuk, whose. pase-ngers and valuable cargo Eielson and Dorbrandt had been re- moving to Alaska by air, reached here yesterday, but there was no informa- tk;;l as to the fate of the explorer him- self. Blizzard Rages at Teller. Since the news of the wreck came by radio from Nanuk, it was presumed that natives traveling along the coast with dog teams had sighted Eielson's plane and had brought word of it to the ship. A mechanic named Borland was with Eifelson when the explorer lac* was heard from directly. Conditions for rescue work were re- ported to be adverse, with a blizzard raging at Teller.
