D. C. POLICE FORCE RECEIVES PRAISE Public Order Committee Of- fers Suggestions at Trade Board Luncheon. High praise of the Washington police force and various suggestions for its im- provement, ranging all the way from ad- \ictising for college graduates to mili- tary training, were voiced by members of ‘the public order committee of the ‘Washington Board of Trade at a lunch- eon meetln‘ yesterday in the Raleigh Hotel The Police Department compares fa- vorably with any military organization of equal size, Maj. Donaid A. Davison, Assistant Engineer Commisisoner, de- clared during a short talk on his recent annual inspection of the force. Maj. Davison said that the privates are a splendid body of men both in their character and appearance. The stations, he said, are old, for the most part, but are clean and kept in an orderly condition. He sald that the ef- ficiency of the privates is a reflection of the conduct of the department by their superiors. The suggestion that an attempt be made to enlist college men was put for- ward by Charles H. Bates, an nwmey He pointed out that the increase pa bill for the Police and Fire Deplr'-menu, when put into effect, would furnish an inducement for the young man just out of college. Robert J. Cottrell, executive secretary of the board, said that a military ap- pearance would instill respect for the police, which now is lacking. He advo- cated regular drill periods. Capt. Frank Burke, commander of the first precinct, & member of the com- mittee, asserted that the present dearth of applicants for the force is due ia great part to the severe criticism that the department is undergoing.
