The arrested youths, who say they are Philip Hamilton Furr, 22, of the 2300 block F ‘street; Theodore Dion Dougherty, 23, of Cherrydale, Va, and Philip Kirkpatrick Hoyton, also 23, of the 300 block East Capitol street, are being held at the seventh precinct polige station on a charge of investiga- tion. Police said they were frigtened away by the approach of a man who obtained the license number of the automobile in which the youths fled. It was the license tag that led to the arrest of the boys several hours later by Police- man John Burke, who found the boys sitting in the parked automobile at Twenty-fourth and F streets. Headquarters Detectives J. A. Foley, Charles Warfleld and C. P. Cox of the clothing squad questioned the youths at Brazil Celebrates. By Cable to The Btar. Convenient youth named Gordon Lewis were being held by police here today on suspicion of connection with an alleged plot to extort money from Hubbard W. Lar- kin, who killed himself this morning in a fire station where he had spent the night. Larkin, 28 years old, was a grandson of John D. Larkin, founder of the Larkin Soap Co. No charges have been laid against the couple, and probably will not be until the woman's husband, Gerald Palmer, to whom she sald she was married in Detroit, and another man known as Joseph Rudy, have been ar- rested. The man known as Rudy cashed a $500 check given him by Larkin, October 24. Complained to Police. Larkin, who was a grand-nephew by marriage of the late Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycrofters at East Aurora, complained at the detective bureau, Thursday, that last Tuesday five men came to his home in Eden, N. Y., and demanded $5000. They were all armed, he said. He told police they sought to extort the money from him “because he had been going with Katherine Palmer, wife of one of the men.”. They threatened to kill him if he did not pay, and he sald he promised the money on Wednesday, but was unable to get it without appealing to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Larkin, in Cali- fornia. He said he gave the same gang a check for $500, October 24, made out “to Joseph Rudy.” Wanted to Defend Her. Larkin confessed to police he had become smitten with the Palmer girl, but said he did not know until later that she was married. He said he would have complained sooner, but he wanted to defend her. The young man had been on friendly terms with the firemen at the Seneca street station and had been spending the nights in the dormitory lately. They said he appeared worried yes- terday, but he declined to tell them what was troubling him. This morn- ing they heard a muffled shot and found him near death under the blan- kets on a cot, a bullet hole in his right temple. He died shortly afterward. HAVANA CELEBRATES. Feast of San Cristobal, Patron Saint, Observed. ¢ HAVANA, November 16 (#).—Havana yesterday commemorated the feast of San Cristobal, its patron saint, whose name is a part of the full name of the Cuban capital, though the fact is not generally known. ‘When Spanish colonists decided some 300 years ago to move the capital from Puerto Principe in Camaguey Province to its presént site they named the new site “San Cristobal de la Habana.” De- sire for brevity reduced it to Havana. Services were held in all cathedrals of Cuba and special masses celebrated at dawn in the tiny temple of old Ha- | vana that commemorates Christopher “c‘olumbuu and the patron saint of the city. i S a X Yi7eie h stores ...
