Fashion World Anticipates Elaborate Social Program To Mark the Winter Season Plans Not Materially Affected by Rumors of Financial Flurries—preliminary Activi- ties Now Well Under Way. HE fashionable world in the National Capital has its plans well underway for a busy season, though there are rumors of a curtailing of entertainments since the recent flurry of the stock market. It is generally conceded in “smart” circles that those who cannot talk of their losses in the “market” amount to little. Word has reached here from Philadelphia that several formal dinner parties, for which cards have been issued, have been canceled and the invitations recalled “because of the general anxiety caused by‘ the market conditions.” Although entertaining in ‘Washington is more of an official nature than in other cities, still the parties of thi: portion of the season are informal and for the most part small. How- ever, luncheon, dinner and tea parties are being given in Washington end the mails are well filled with invitations, though it must be said they are fewer than usual. FFICERS of the various branches of the military and naval service O stationed in Washington have been active in entertaining during ¢ the past week and will continue through the coming seven or eight days. The Navy was the most prominent last week, with nze first of the series of dances which officers of the Navy and Marine Corps give each Winter, Navy and Mrs. Adams headed the list of prominent officials and f the Navy at the party, just as the Secretary of War and ‘}’Afl::.egogd were ex);)ected a'?the first of the series of Army dances Friday night of this week. The chief of staff and Mrs. Charles P. Summerall had planned a dinner party for the Secretary and Mrs. Good preceding the dinner, and Mr. and Mrs. Good were to have re- ceived the guests at the dance. Reception Scheduled For Navy Medical Corps The surgeon general of the Navy and Mrs. Charles E. Riggs will be at home to the officers of the Medical Corps of the Navy and their wives Fri- day afternoon from 4 to 6 o'clock. Mrs. Riggs will receive informally Sunday afternoons through the season. Mrs. R. M. Kauffmann will not ob- serve her day at home tomorrow after- noon, due to absence from the city. She will resume her days at home after Thanksgiving. Mrs. James A.
