Admiral Dewey started the Navy Re- lief Soclety after the War with Spain for the help of families of sailors and marines who died in the service. It endeavors to add to the Government pension and enable a widow to feed and shelter herself and her children until she can become self-supporting. It has been kept up in all naval districts of the United States, and it is customary to have the wife of each navy yard commandant act as chairman of that chapter. Mrs. Arthur L. Willard is chairman of the Washington branch. Now that the old custom of giving balls in the support of local charities has been supplanted by the Community Chest, the Navy Relief ball for the benefit of a national charity stands out as a notable event and is of great in- terest to all visitors who are fortunate enough to be in town that night. The boxes are selling rapidly. Som-~ generous donors who are unable to come to the ball have helped to fill the de- mand by giving their boxes back for a resale.
