THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D.. €., THURSDAY, YOVITMBER THE EVENING STORY One of World-Famous Works of Literature THE FIRST GORILLA. BY PAUL DU CHAILLU. (Paul Belloni du Chaillu, 1835-1903, was & Franco-American _traveler and author: his works include “Explorations and Adventures torial Africa.” A~ Journey = to . The Land of the Midnight e Viking Age. etc.) One day, during my African explora- tions, when a snake had been eaten, and 1, the only empty-stomached individual of the company, had sufficiently reflect- ed on the disadvantages of being bred in a civilized country, we began to lock about the ruins of the village near which we sat. | A degenerate kind of sugar cane was | growing on the very spot where the | houses had formerly stood, and I made haste to pluck some of this and chew it for the little sweetness it had. But, as we were plucking, my men perceived | what instantly threw us all into the| greatest excitement. Here and there | the cane was beaten down, torn up by the roots and lying about in fragments which had evidently been chewed. I knew that these were tracks of the gorilla, and joy filled my heart. My men looked at each other in silence, and muttered “Nguyla,” which is as much as to say Mpongwe, “Ngina,” or | as_we say, gorilla. We followed these traces, and pres- | ently came to the footprint of the so: long-desired animal. It was the first time I had ever seen these footprints, and my sensations were indescribable. | Here I was now, it seemed, on the point | of meeting face to face that monster of i whose ferocity, strength and cunning | the natives had told me so much; an animal scarce known to the civilized | world, and which no white man before | had hunted. My heart beat till I} feared its loud pulsations, and my feel- ings were really exsited to a painful degree. By the tracks it was easy to know | that there must have been several | gorillas in company. We prepared at | once to follow them. | We could easily see that there were | four or five of them: though none | appeared very large. Ve saw where they had run along on all fours, the usual mode of progression of these animals; and where, from time to time, they had seated themselves to chew the canes they had borne off. The chase began to be very exciting. We had agreed to return to the | women and their guards, and consult | upon final operations, when we should have discovered their probable cause; and this was now done. To make sure of not alarming our prey, we moved the whole party forward a little way to where some leafy huts, built by pass- ing traders, served for shelter and con- cealment. And having here stowed the women, we preparéd once mote to set out in chase, this time hopeful to get & shot. Lookin, once more to our guns, we started off. I confess that I had ncver been more excited in my life. I had heard of the terrible roar of the gorilla, of its vast strength, its fierce courage, if, unhappily, only wounded by a shol. I knew that we were about to pit our- selves against an animal which even the leopard of mountains fears. Slowly we pressed on through the dense brush, fearing almost to breathe lest we should alarm the beasts. Ma- kinda was to go to the right of the rock, while I took to the left. Unfor- tunately, he circled it at too great a distance. The watchful animals saw Suddenly I was startled by a strange, t, half-human, devilish ecry, and beheld four young gorillas run- ning toward the deep forests. We fired, but hit nothing. ‘Then we rushed on in pursuit; but they knew the woods better than we. Once I caught a glimpse of one of the animals again, but an intervening tree spoiled my aim, and I did not fire. We ran till we were exhausted, but in vain. The alert beasts made good their escape. When we could pursue no more ‘we returned slowly to our camp, where the women were anxiously expecting us. As I saw mmlulmnnm——on ey looked fearfully like hairy men; their heads down, their bodies inclined forward, their whole appearance was like men running for their lives. Take with this their awful cry, which, fierce and animal as it is, has yet something human in its dis- cordance, and you will cease to wonder that the natives have the wildest super- stitions about these “wild men of the ‘woods, We started early on the next trip, Recpo_lgibility Use Yellow Cabs and Black and White Cabs Owned and Operated by Brown Bros. o\ficly/‘ COMPLEXION that nol/n'nq will remove Wotmn you like a lovely | skin? Hour after hour we traveled, and yet no sign of gorilla. Only the everlasting chattering of little monkeys—and not many of these—and occasionally birds. In fact, the forests of this rt of Africa are not so full of life as in some other parts to the south. Suddenly Miengal uttered a little cluck with his tongue, which is the native's way of showing that some- thing is stirring and that a sharp look- out is necessary. And presently I noticed ahead of us seemingly a noise. of someone breaking down branches or twigs of trees. ‘This was the gorilla, T knew at once, by the eager and satisfied looks of ihe men. They looked once more carefully at their guns, to see if by any chaice the powder had fallen out of the pans: I also examined them to make sure that all was right; and then we marched on cautiously. ‘The singular noise of the breaking of tree branches continued. We walked with the greatest care, making no noise at all. The countenances of the men showed that they thought themseives |engaged in & very serious undertaking; but we pushed on, until finally we thought we saw through the thick woods the moving of the branches and small trees which the great beast was tearing down, probably to get them the berries and fruits he lived on. Suddenly, as we were creeping along, in a silence' which made & heavy breath seem loud and distinct, the woods were filled with the tremendous barking roar of the gorilla. Then the underbrush swayed rapidly just ahead, and pres- ently before us stood an immense male gorilla. He had gone through the jun- gle on all fours; but when he saw' our party he raised himself erect and looked us boldly in the face. He stood about a dozen yards from us, and was a sight T'll never forget. Nearly six feet high, with immense body, huge chest and great muscular arms, with fiercely glaring deep gray eyes, and a hellish expression of face, which seemed to me like some vision. Thus stood thc king of the African forest. He was not afrald of us. He stood there, and beat his breast with his huge fists till it resounded like an immense bass drum. which is their mode of offering deflance, meantime giving vent to roar after roar. The roar of the gorilla is the most singular and awfui noise heard in_Africa. -It begins with a sharp bark. like an angry dog, then glides into a deep bass roll which liter- ally and closely resembles the roll of distant _thunder along the sky, for which T have sometimes been tempted to take it where I did not see the ani- mal. So deep Is it that it seems to proceed less from the mouth and throat than from the deep chest and paunch | His eyes began to flash fiercer firc as we stood motionless on the defen- sive, and the crest of short hair which stands on his forehead began to twitch rapidly up and down, while his powerful fangs were shown as he again sent forth a thunderous roar. And now truly he resembled nothing but some hellish dream-creature—a being of that hideous order, half man half beast. He advanced a few steps—then stopped to utter that hideous roar again —advanced again, and finally stopped when at a distance of about six yards from us. And here, just as he began another of his roars, beating his breast in rage, we fired and killed him. With a groan which had something | terribly human in it, and yet was fuil | of brutishness, he fell forward on his face. The body shook convulsively for a few minutes, the limbs moved about in a struggling way, and then all was quiet—death had done its work. ——— The body of Dick Dowling, Con- federate hero of the ‘Civil War, lies in an unmarked grave adjoining a little Mexican church in Houston, Tex. ig as Am SENTENCE DEFERRED Myer Epstein, Whose Auto XKilled Skater on Annapolis Bridge Given Three Days to Appeal, Special Dispatch to The Star, ANNAPOLIS, Md., November 14— Myer Epstein of West Annapolis, near here, was convicted of manslaughter by Judge Robert Foss here yesterday in con- nection with the death September 19 of David Carrol, 17-year-old youth, who was struck by Epstein's automobile on the Severn River Bridge. Sentence was deferred three days to give time for appeal. When his case was called today, Epstein filed a petition for a change of venue, contending through his attorneys, Paul Higgenbotham of Baltimore, and George Woelfel of Annapolis, that be- cause of the intense feeling against him as a result of the youth's death, and be- cause of previous convictions in the same court for bootlegging, he could not receive a fair trial. States Attorney A. Theodore Brady opposed the petition, pointing out that while out on bail since the killing, Epstein had not suffered at the hands of the citizenry as he said he feared. Some 15 witnesses told virtually the same story related to the coronor’s jury. Epstein’s auto ran over the Carroll boy and his companion, Margaret Bassford, | [ When you're out of sorts because liver and bowels are not functioning properly, don’t take a violent purgative that will upset your whole system and make you | feel all the worse., A candy | Cascaret will soon have you feeling fine again—and there'll be no unpleasant after effects.
