Bascom Slemp, national Repub- Nean committeeman from Virginia and former secretary to President Coolidge, told a country-wide radio audience last night, in a broadcast sponsored by the ‘National Woman's Party, that the elec- tion of eight women to Congress from widely separated States is proof that rejudice against women in public office ’; being overcome. ~Hundreds of women occupy elective offices and thousands fill every kind ot appointive office,” Mr. Slemp said. “Nowadays the same test is applied to women candidates and applicants as is applied to men.” The speaker assured his audience that both political parties have reacted to the growing sentiment for women's participation in the Government. Of the eight women Representatives, Mr. Slemp -pointed out, five are from Re- ublican districts and the others from f)emofl'nuc districts, in such widely~ separated States as California, Florida, Tilinois, Massachusetts, New York and Kentucky. This tendency is further {llustrated, the speaker said, by the increasing number of women who fill a wide varjety of recrom!h)e positions in all departments of the Government. Mr. Slemp’s talk was one of a series on the subject broadcast by the Na- tional Woman's Party over a Nation- wide hook-up of the National Broad- Sext "-3-“' Speaker will be Miss ARG ex ’s er inie Goodri dean of 3 Yale University Nursing School, who will discuss ‘woman’s place in the nursing profes- sion.
