The little drama bsgan about an hour before the scheduled opening of school. There was smoke coming from -the furnace room of the Burroughs School, at E'ghteenth and Monroe streels northeast, and John R. Baker, tne janitor, was the first actor to perform. Fire, he said, was burning in the soft-coal bin, but that could be con- trolled in a jiffy. Ard then Miss M. E. Draney, principal of the school, came upon ‘the scene to hear Mr. Bakers belittling remarks about the fire. Then the youngsters bega:n arriving at the school. They stopped to gaze wide-eyed at the liitle coll of smoie ceeping from the basement windo' Even if it was but a wisp, it w smoke, and that meant fire, and when Miss Draney noticed gas -seeping into the school building and decided to call the Fire Department the Burroughs pupils were satisfied with life. When it was nearly 9 o'clock the engines arrived. There was No. 17 engine, for instance; No. 4 truck, and then there was the No. 1 rescue squad, which came along out of habit It Ends All Too Soon because they heard the fire was at a school.
