Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 6.—Today's bond market was an undecided affair, with forced liquidation sending some prices down, while investment buying caused others to rise. It did not differ greatly, however, from recent sessions, in that tbe convertibles reflected the stock market tendency of their com- lementary _stocks, while investment ues, generally speaking, were strong. | The advances were most numerous in the high-grade railroad and public utility sections. Atchison General 4s were up a_point and St. Louis, San Fran A 4s and Unlon Pacific 4s (1968) fractionally higher, Youngs- toym* Sheet ‘& 'Tube ‘55, Standard Oil of, Ji 5s, Duquesne Light 41.s, E big 58 and Consolidated Gas S | iy wved. 10 the foreiga German, French and Belgian descrip- tions wefé higher. The additional issue of $10,000,000 of City of Chicago tax-anticipation notes offered today is on a slightly better basis to the borrower than previous offerings this year. The notes come at a time when there is a large demand for short-term municipals and their marketing also_has been helped by the reduction in the rediscount rate since the last issue and a permanently changed situation regarding the money outlook. QUIGLEY ASKS DIVORCE. DENVER, November 6 (#).—AlIl pos- sibility of a reconciliation between William Bryan Quigley, New York and Denver lawyer, and his wife, Mrs. Vir- ginia Coxe Quigley, appeared blasted to- day by action of Quigley in filing an answer to charges of his wife in a re- cent divorce suit. Quigley still is in a hospital as the result of his self-inflicted wound and almost daily is visited by Mrs. Quigley. ‘These visits caused a belief there might ‘be a patching up of the marital rift, but the court answer in the suit is taken as an indication that reconciliation is not probable. In addition to' the divorce action, Quigley is defendant in a $50,000 aliena- tion of affections sult filed several months ago by the husband of Mrs. Marfe Kunkle, former Princess Marie Alimova of Russia. Gun-Laden Bandits Arrested. KOVNO, Lithuania, November 6 (P). —Four revolvers, six bombs and an in- fernal machine were said yesterday to have been found in possession of two subversive agents arrested in a village near Vilna.. Police said the men planned t6 blow up the military club and secret service offices here. The in- fernal machine was exploded as the ar- rests were being made, but did no damage. t° Japanese, ‘Ttalian, Sales. Lib3%s... 313 Liblst4}s 34 Lib4th 43%s 68 US4s1944. 11 US4yss2. It was apparent that the busi- ress community in general was re- acting in much the same fashion as the innumerable small market traders who sought emergency funds to get mn on the rising momentum, ratber than solely for emergency protection. This inquirer could find no instances in which installmert buyers were being unduly pressed for payments and, on the whole, it is indicated that, with the upturn of the market the establishea system of large-scale distribution will not be seriously affected. It was ad- mitted, however, by executives of large mercantile firms that had the market slump reached the actual panic stage widespread retrenchment and tighten- ing up in installment selling might have been necessary. In some cases it was predicted that, even with the pres- ent hopeful outlook, there would be in- creased caution ard generally more conservative methods of financing ana distributing. This was characterized by one merchart as “possibly one or the salutary effects of the market break.” Pawnbrokers reaped a_rich harvest from the market crisis. There were re- ports of interest as high as 175 per cent on loans secured by furniture, jew- els, pictures, heirlooms, automobiles and | every krown kind of collateral. While New York State has a strict usury law, it is frequently evaded by the pay- ment of a “bonus” to the pawnbroker. POTATO MARKET.
