CHICAGO, November 6 (#).—Wheat values suffered sharp breaks in the late trading today after violent fluctuations earlier. Persistent downturns in Stock Exchange prices, together with word that the Canadian growers’ pool still has part of the 1928 wheat crop unsold, proved finally to be much more than a counterbalance for all stimulating fac- tors in sight. Buying power gave out completely at some late stages of the day’s wheat trading here, especially after December delivery of wheat at Kansas City was shown to have dropped below the figure at which the Federal Farm Board had announced it would loan money on wheat. ‘Wheat closed extremely nervous 1% to 115 a bushel under yaam-dny- finish, Corn closed unchanged to ¥ off, oats, 1% to 1%al% down, and provisions showing 10 to 20 decline. Rediscounts for member banks held by the Federal Reserve Bank of Rich- mond declined from $66,691,000 at the close of business September 15 to $51,- 152,000 on October 15, a drop of ap- proximately $15,500,000, at the time of the year when rediscounts tend to either remain relatively constant or to increase slightly. This reduction in re- discounts lowered the reserve bank’s total earning assets, but the bank bought approximately $10,500,000 m bankers’ acceptances in the open mi ket during the month, which left uu net decline in earning assets only about $5,000,000, from $74,873,000 on Sep- tember 15 to $70,128,000 on October 15. Note Circulation. However, rediscounts have since in- creased . to $57,181,000 and ea: assets to $77.609,000 on October 21. Federal reserve note circulation in the fifth district rose umn-lly from uz- 983,000 last month to $84, the middle of October. Member btnk reserve deposits declined from $66,- 288,000 % the middle of September to $62,089,000 on October 15. The several changes enumerated, with others of less importance, raised the cash re- serves of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond from $83,960,000 on Septem- ber 15 to $87,444,000 on October 15, and also raised the ratio of cash re- serves to note and deposit liabilities combined from 56.08 per cent to 58.03 er cent. The reserve ratio subsequent- decnned to 53.94 per cent on Octo~ A cnmparlmn of the figures in the reserve bank’s statement for October 15 this year with the figures reported a year carlier shows little change in the amount of credit extended to mem~ ber banks.
