SET BOOK RECORD. 3 ¢ e o 10,000 Weighty Tomes Are Shelved Each Year for University Libraries. By the Associated Press. BERLIN, November 2. —Germany easily holds the book-producing record. Every 20 minutes, day and t, & book: rolls off the presses in the Fatherland, but it is estimated that some 10,000 of the annual harvest of volumes remain uncut and unread. Their destiny Is to’ moulder away on top shelves of uni- versity libraries. ‘The great flood of books is caused by H:e compulsory publication of disserta- ons honors, a centuries’ old custom which:» survives to the present day. A halt was called during the inflation period, when typed manuscript served the purfeu, but since 1925 di tations in book form were reinstated “by authority.” 10,000 Printed a Year. Every year from 6,000 to 10,000 learned theses are printed—some of them veritable monuments of pains- taking research—that are doomed to oblivion from the time they leave the presses. The state insists that of every dissertation 200 coples be printed for distribution to all universities and col- leges. They are carefully registered in a catalogue, which this year was a book of over 1,000 pages, but their only use is that they can be “borrowed” by budding savants on the popular prin- ciple that “two old books make a new one.” One condition for taking a doctor's degree is that each dissertation shall develop some new idea or work out an original problem. Candidates for the degree are but human, so they often turn for inspiration to the works of those who came before them. Many of their subjects are weird and abstruse.
