CANTON, China, October 11.—In spite of hearty competition on the part | of manufacturers of German and French | airplanes, American-made machines are{ securing the cream of aeronautical business in China. At the present time, there are eight American-made planes in the country to one of European make, according to figures compiled here, | and there is a strong possibility of the | rate increasing within the next few | months { One does not =y to search far to find the reason 1. ¥ this preference for flying craft made * the United States. | Most of the pilots in the country hail from Canton and a large percentage of these have either been trained in American aviation camps or in Ameri- can-made planes. Their opinion in the matter has shown a tendency to in- fluence the entire country. Nucleus of Air Forces. 1t is these young men who form the nucleus of the government's air forces. They have man flights over the length and breadth of their country and are usually hearty boosters of Am:rican- | made craft Gen. Chang Wei-Chang, so-called “Lindbergh” of China, and the new aviation chief of the Nationalist gov- | ernment, received his flying training 5 America. | The recent break with Soviet Russia has proved an incentive to the Na- tional government to build up a large alr force and the government of Can- ton, or rather of Kwangtung Province, plans to co-operate by establishing & unit consisting of 100 planes. Prepar- ations to purchase 62 of this number— all of which will be American-made— have already been made. MUNICH, Germany, October 11.— Franz Tausend, a former plumber and known widely as a professed alchemist, purported here Wednesday to_produce a tenth of a gram of gold from 1.67 centi- grams of lead. Officials of the mint watched him carefully, but still are not convincdd he actually obtained the gold from the lead. Indeed, feeling grew yesterday that he had hoodwinked even the high officials of the state mint, who issued an of- ficial statement reading: “After experimenting for two hours Tausend produced a grain of the purest gold, weighing on2 tenth of a gram, which was smelted from 1.67 grams of lead. [Experts describe the result as surprisingly favorable and contradictory to scientific knowledge. The director of the mint, however, is unable to suppress doubts as to whether Tausend was able to smuggle the gold into the test in spite of all precautions.” Held for Defraud. It was generally conceded ‘the former plumber, who has been in jail for hav- ing defrauded numerous high person- ages, including Gen. Ludendorff, of $100,000 on alchemy schemes, would have to repeat his feat under much stricter control if he were to satisfy the doubting Thomases.
