ITERATURE TOPIC * INTARFF DEBATE New Mexico Senator Attacks Section of Bill Restricting Importation of Books. Censorship of books by customs in- spectors provoked a lively literary d cussion in the Senate yesterday as Senator Cutting, Republican, New Mexico, opened an attack on & section | of the tariff bill restricting importa- tion of literature. ‘The debate ranged all the way from the classical “Arablan Nights” to the more recent publication of “All Quiet on the Western Front.” When the Benate quit work for the day, Cutting | still had the floor and the opinions of a dozen Senators were in the record. No vote was taken on his amendment to elimindte the consorship section. List of Books Blacklisted. From the time that Cutting produced ® “blacklist” of 739 books barred from entry into this coun the question excited -unusual interest, all of the Senators present—more than half of the membership—taking chairs around him and giving close attention to what he had to say. He did not read the s t, “The “blacklist,” Cutting said, showed the “depth of absurdity” to which of- ficials ‘went in forbidding entry to books. On the list were the names of Boccacio, Aristophanes and Voltaire, and included” in it were books Spanish, French, Italian and English. Pointing out that a French edition of the “Arabian Nights” and books of Balzac had been barred, Cutting said the question of free speech and free thought in this country was of greater importance than the tariff bill. He argued the question should be left to the States, where juries could decide “this legislation tries to keep this sort of thing from a jury.” Senator Dill, Demodrat, Washington, called attention to the ‘fact that 30 or 40 pages had been eliminated from | the American_version of “All Quiet on | the Western Front.” a recent German | ture of the deletion was. |~ “Hasn't “the Senator been able to secure the original?” Cutting asked. “I haven't,” DIl answered. “I've been equally unfortunate,” Cut- ting said, as the galleries smiled.
