MERIDIANHILL PARK TERRACE S STARTED Company Begins Excavation Work in Program of Beautification. Another step in the beautification of Meridian Hill Park, nestled in the populous portion of the Capital at Six- teenth street and Florida avenue, is now forward, with the starting of work on Grand Terrace. Lieut. Col. U. S. Grant, 3d. director of the office of public buildings and iblic_parks, announced today that the DR. SCOTT RECEIVES DEGREE AT WARSAW Washington Juditial Science Leader Is Honored on Eurg pean Visit. During his recent visit to Europe Dr. James ywn Scott of Washington re- ceived from the University of ‘Warsaw the honorary degree of doctor of laws in recognition of his eminence in jurid- ical science. Only two other Americans, President Hoover and the late President Woodrow llson, have been similarly honored with degrees from this institution. The | degree was awarded October 1, it was announced here, in connection with the celebration of the tenth anniversary of reconstructed Poland. Dr. Scott is professor of international law_at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and secretary of the Carnegie Endowment for International Drew Co., which has a contract | || for this particular job, has just com- menced excavation at the west end of the Grand Terrace. The earlier part of the month was employed by the firm in constructing the ramp from | Fifteenth street, together with fences and tool sheds. The grand terrace will form a pre- tentious connection link between the upper gardens, now finished and a popular recreational area for the public, and the Jower gardens, which are being given the finishing touches. The lower g‘mam contain a statue of President ichanan, which recently was placed in the east end of the park and will be unveiled in the near future. Horace W. Peaslee, chairman of the committee on the National Capital of | the American Institute of Architects, 1s supervising the architectural ‘features of the Meridian Hill Park development. When finished, there will be east and West ascents on the grand terrace flanking the cascade, which will be constructed.
