Poster || N. 1966 | OIL FUEL DROUGHT NEW YORK MENACE Strikers Attack Emergency Trucks Guarded by Police. Cold Snap Feared. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 11.—Having just escaped a threatened shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables because of a strike of truck drivers, New York today faced possibility of a gasoline and oil shortage as a result of a strike of 3,000 oil truck drivers. The strike, which started in Brooklyn last Saturday, had spread today to Manhattan, parts of Queens, Nassau County and other sections of Long Island. Despite the efforts of the nine companies involved to deliver the gaso- line and oil by emergency crews, many filling stations reported their supplies were exhausted. City Faces Shortage. Officlals of the fire department and the department of hospitals were de- vising plans to replenish the fuel sup- plies at the city buildings should the strike be prolonged. At Bellevue Hospital, where the sup- Iply of gasoline was down to less than cne day's requirement, a special tank wagon under an escort of motor cycle police delivered 900 gallons, sufficient for nine days. Should a sudden cold snap develop it was feared many apartment houses and hotels equipped with oil burning fur- naces would be affected. Strikers Attack Trucks. Despite police and private guards on trucks manned by emergency crews, seven trucks were attacked by strikers. JELL REG. U. 8. PAT. OFF. By the Associated Press. SAN ANTONIO, Tex., October 11.— Because they felt that erection of an- other church in their block would make it “an intolerable place in which to live,” residents of one neighborhood here have petitioned the city clerk to refuse a church a building permit. ‘The petition says that there are two churches in the block and two more less than two blocks away and that it is proposed to construct a third in the block. The document emphasized the desire of the community to “get'some rest at night,” which it said church crowds prevented. S BUCKLEY LbSES PLEA. CINCINNATI, October 11 (#).—Bert Buckley, former State treasurer, lost his fight to escape serving a two-and- half-year penitentiary term and paying a $1,000 fine for attempted bribery of a prohibKion officer when the United States Circuit Court of Appeals refused yesterday to grant him a rehearing of his appeal.
