BASE BALL PLAYER ‘GUILTY' OF MURDER Samuel! “Red” Crane Faces|&on Prison ‘Sentence for Siaying Girl. By the Assoziated Press. HARRISBURG, Pa., September 26.— Samuel (Red) Crane, one-time big league ball player, today faced 10 to 20 years in jall for slaying a girl for ‘whom he sacrificed his diamond career. He was convicted last-night of mur- der in the second degree by a jury of four women and eight men for shooting 1o death Miss Della Lyter in a hotel room here when he found her in the company of John D, Oren, a brick sales- man, who had supplanted him in the girl's affections. Crane is also under indictment for the slaying of Oren, who attacked him with a ukulele after the base ball player had shot the girl. o The defense contended Crane was so E mpletely under the influence of liquor lt t e time of the shooting that he did ;mt have normal control over his intel- ect. Crane in 1913 was with the Greens- ‘boro club of the North Carolina League. Later he played with the Philadelphia Athletics, the Washington Senators, Brooklyn and Cincinnati. In the minor leagues he played with Richmond, Bal- timore, Buffalo, Reading, Seattle, Min- neapolis and Indianapolis and became a shortstop sensation in the. American Association. He played his last base ball in 1927 with the Reading International League team. After the close of the season he met Miss Lyter, and, he testified during his trial, tore up his 1928 contract with the Buffalo Internationals to remain here with her.
