LONDON, September 26.—Statements in a London newspaper that the giant British airships R-100 and R-101, now nearing completion, would prove ob- solete before they even left the sheds, brought a denial yesterday from Comdr. Sir Charles Burney, head of the Airship Guarantee Co., which is building the R-100. Sir Charles confidently expected the R-100 to have a speed of at least 80 miles an hour and to lift 62 or 63 tons, whereas the contract called for only 70 miles an hour and a lift of 60 tons. “It is too early yet to make any an- nouncement regarding the date of trials,” he sald. “We are proceeding with machinery trials, and hope soon to fix up the trials in the air.” Built for Egypt Route. Comdr. Burney said the R-100 was de- signed for Egyptian routes, not for the Atlantic route to Canada. The airship is suftable for trial flights across the Atlantle, but it was never intended for regultr service on that route. ‘The suggestion the R-100 is already obsolete is decidedly at variance with a statement of Comdr. Hugo Eckener, who said after the conclusion of his recent flight in the Graf Zeppelin that he proposed to build & new ship of approximately the same shape as the R-100, which is faster than the Zeppelin. Plans Still Uncertain. Some uncertainty still exists. how- ever, as to which ships will be allocated to the different empire routes. The R-100, though its builders say is for the Egyptian service, is equipped with petrol engines, and so far no petrol-fueleda irship has traveled in tropical regions. The R-101, being built by the gov- ernment, is equipped with fuel oil en- gines more suitable for the tropics. sy, — NEW HEALTH CLINIC HOURS AT CLARENDON Beginning October 1, Sessions Will Be Held in Afternoon Instead of Morning. By a Staff Correspondent of The Star. ARLINGTON, Va. September 26.— Beginning the first Tuesday in October the hours of the Clarendon Health Center will be changed from morning to afternoon. Dr. P. M. Chichester, county health officer, will be present at the Tuesday clinics from 1:30 until 4 o'clock, but’ will not be present at the Friday clinic. The following regular Winter sched- ule for the ore-school dental eclinics will go into effect the first Tuesday in October, with Dr. C. R. Boyland, school dentist, in attendance: Pirst Tuesday., Clarendon Health Center; first Wednesday, Potcmac Health Center, and first Thursday, Po- tomac Health Center. IHours, 9 to 12 and 1 to 4. These clinics will be held monthly. ‘There will be no fess and no work done for school children, the latter being cared for in the schools. STICKS TO GARDEN WORK. COLUMBIA, S.
