What was that? Flip the Terrier threw up his head to listen. That noise had come from inside the dear Old' Briar-patch. It could mean but one, thing and this was that some one was in there. There it was again—thump, thump! Flip's ears were cocked for- ward. He stood perfectly still, except- ing for a little quiver that ran over him now and then. It was a quiver of excitement. For the first time Flip got a good view of Peter and instantly he began to dance around excitedly. “That's the fellow I chased into the hole in the old wall!” he exulted. “Yes, sir; that's the very same fellow! There isn't any old wall here and I'll get him.” He began to follow along on the outer edge of the dear Old Briar-patch as Peter moved along inside. When he came to one of Peter's little paths he started to crawl in. But there was a bramble bush right there and though he flat- tened himself as much as he could, those brambles made him yelp. Mean- wile Peter had moved along, grinning as_he heard those little yelps. Flip was growing more and more excited. ®Every time he came to a little opening that seemed to lead into the dear Old Briar-patch, he rushed at it and tried to get in. Each time it | brought a yelp—sometimes two or three —for each time the brambles scratched him. Peter Rabbit was enjoying it. He grew bolder. He would stop and sit in plain sight just back of a bramble bush, and chuckle to himself as Flip grew more and more excited and did his gfit to get in there. Peter was teasing p. Meanwhile little Mrs. keeping out of sight. She didn't ap- prove of what Peter was doing. She didn't approve at all. But there was nothing she could do about it and so she sat still. Flip hadn't discovered her at all. It made her nervous to have that dog barking outside the dear Old Briar-patch and doing his best to get in. What if he should succeed in getting in? He was a small dog and he might get in. She did wish that Peter would stop his teasing. Peter didn't stop. He grew bolder. He hadn't the least bit of fear.
