All-sear freight service every Wednesday & Saturday Washington's fire loss during the fiscal year ended June 30, last, is re- garded as “low in insurance loss rat- ings,” according to the annual report of the District of Columbia Fire De- partment submitted yesterday to the District Commissioners. ‘The total property loss, $1,088,709 for the year, showed a decrease of $12.455; compared with 1928. Chief Engineer George 8. Watson declared the average loss per fire was $312, which was re- garded as “very low,” ‘or a per capita of $1.97. Slightly more than 50 per cent of the total loss resulted from two disastrous fires. The Dulin & Martin fire repre- sented $361,332 of the total amount and a $200,000 fire occurred at Gies- boro Point, District of Columbia, when a seaplane burned. Washington’s total fire loss represented a fraction over 1.52 per cent of the $71,235.876 in insurance on the properties involved. Asks Wage Increase. Except for asking that the pay of members of the Fire Department be made substantially equal to the pay in other large cities, Chief Watson made no other recommendations in his re- port. Various suggestions for improve- ment in the service for which addi- tional funds would be required pre- viously had been forwarded to the Com- missioners in the form of estimates for the 1931 fiscal year. Alarms of fire during the year were 4,185 in number, an increase of 481 over the preceding year. There were 51 fires of a suspicious nature during the year and 13 of unquestionable in- cendiary origin. A boy was placed in the psychopathic ward of Gallinger Hospital for having set fire to the Henry D. PARIS, September 10.—France has a bumper crop of wheat, sufficient not | only for the entire requirements of home consumption, but for export, for the first time in many years. Owing to the very excellence of the crop, how- ever, France has a farm relief problem on _its hands. This was brought out Sunday in a letter from Victor Boret, French food dictator in the Clemenceau cabinet, to Jean Hennessy, present minister of agriculture. He asked that a wheat export bonus be given growers in the form of receipts which might be ap- plied against imports of coffee, cocoa, m and other commodities. ‘The premiums on wheat exports, vhu:h would protect farmers against quotations, Boret suggests, be equal to the difference be- tween the price of home-grown wheat in domestic markets and that of for- eign wheat f.0.b. at French seaports, thus delivering to the French flrmer the usual import tax levied by the government on rnreig-n ‘wheat, TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS.
