Lest time and effort you may waste. —Old Mother Nature, Bowser the Hound sat on the bank of the Smiling Pool and he was grin- ning. Coming out from the Laughing Brook was a brown head moving rap- idly through the water. A little way back of that was a black and white head following the brown one. That was the head of Flip the Terrier. And Flip was excited. You would have known that just to look at him. He was swimming for all he was worth. Bowser chuckled. HE WAS SURPRISED THAT HE WASN'T GAINING ON THAT RAT | AS HE HAD EXPECTED TO. “He thinks that’s just a plain, every- day rat,” thought Bowser. “He certain- 1y is death on rats at the barn, but he 13 going to learn something more about rats. There are rats and rats.” ‘The brown head was moving easily through the water. Behind it Flip was making his legs go for all they were worth. He was making hard work of it because he was hurrying so. “Go it, Flip! Go it!” barked Bowser. Flip made no reply. He couldn’t. He was too busy keeping the water out of his mouth and nose. Besides, he needed all his breath. He was surprised that he wasn't gaining on that rat as BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. he had expected to. He had had no idea that any rat could swim like this one. He did wish the fellow would go ore. “If only he would go ashore, I would soon make short work of him,” thought Flip. “My, but he is a big fellow! On land he would put up a good fight. I think I'm gaining on him. Yes, sir, I think I'm gaining on him.” He was gaining. The distance be- tween them was growing less and less. Bowser's eyes twinkled as he saw this. He knewswhat Flip didn't know, namely, that that rat wasn’t swimming his best. He was letting Flip gain. Flip was get- ting more and more excited. He was getting so excited that he tried to bark, and as a result swallowed more water than he liked. He was almost to that rat now. In fact, he could see that rat’s tail going back and forth in the water very fast beyond his nose. He did his best to paddle faster. And right then something happened. There was a splash right in front of him. It threw water right in his face. The water got In his eyes. He shook his head. And when he could see again he was alone. Yes, sir, he was alone. Flip was a puzzled dog. He swam round and round, but there was no sign of that rat. He was right in the middle of the Smiling Pool. There was no place there for that rat to hide. Flip didn’t know what to make of it. Round and round he swam. Finally, he headed for the bank where Bowser the Hound sat. Flip crawled up on the bank and shook himself. Before he could say a word Bowser spoke. “Did you catch him?” asked Bowser with a twinkle in his eyes. “No,” replied Flip. “But he must have drowned.” “Do you think s0?” inquired Bowser. “Of course!” replied Flip. “He went down and he didn’t come up.” “Oh!” said Bowser. “Is that so? Who do you call that over on the other side of the Smiling Pool?” Flip looked across. There was & brown head moving along through the water close to the other bank. In- stantly all of Flip's excitement returned to him. “It's another rat!” he ex- claimed. “That’s what it is, another rat! Watch me get that fellow!” Into the Smiling Pool Flip plunged once more and started to swim across. (Copyright, 1929.) Hav\warp Her New Excuse.
