Your Baby and Mine BY MYRTLE MEYER ELDRED. Every child, even from the age of two years on, enjoys having some dis- tinctive chracteristics which set him apart from other children, Befty may enjoy the distinction of being unable to digest milk. Sally can't eat break- fast without getting sick. Elmer can run faster than any boy school. Whatever characteristic is saddled upon the child by a repetition of cer- tain experiences is hugged forever after and lived up to. Some of these are harmless distinc- tions. It is fine for Elmer, who can't vie physically with other children of his age, to feel that he is a superior runner; but one characteristic which some children cling to persistently makes them difficult to handle. This is the abllity to stand punishment. John is nine years old. He is the middle one of three. children. His older brother has a lovely disposition (so says his mother, and no doubt brother lives up to this distinction, too) and the baby is no trouble, but the mother “can’t do a thing with John.” He does just as he pleases and then takes a sort of grlde in coming to his mother, telling her what he has done, and taking his punishment like & man. No matter how hard he is whipped he never squeals, but just stands it. Now what can be done in a case like that, when punishment don’t punish? The solution lies in the opposite direction. .The boy is enjoying the reputation of being courageous and taking his punishments. He probably misbehaves in order to be punished and thus add to his reputation as an | incorrigible boy who can take the hardest beatings without squealing. He looks down upon brother with the lovely disposition and probably in- w-rdly thinks of him ‘as a coward be- cause he is good and never needs to be punished. ‘What this boy needs to understand is that it is far harder to be good than to be naughty and then be punished. It takes more courage to refuse to misbehave than it does to do as one pleases. He should never be hurt phyx\cnlly for anything he does, since this only encourages him to further misbehave. Instead it would be better if his parents began building up 2 reputation for having the courage t be good, and this type of child would | as eagerly live up to that distinction as to the one he now bears of being o | protected from heat by a folded napkin. a boy who.can stand any amount of punishment without crying. Straight Talks to Wonien About Money BY MARY ELIZABETH ALLEN, Be sure you are in possession of all the costs before you calculate the ex- pense of your vacation. Shortsighted- ness has caused more than one young woman to wire home for money she had not_e: zcna to spend. In some cases mis are likely to occur if one is inexperienced. Of course when you secure reserva- tions or accommodations you know | what room and board will cost. If the resort is exehisive or inclined upwards in its rates, you will be sure that the rate quoted s on, the American not the European plan, and that it includes board. When golf, lwlmmlng. tennis and other recre mentioned as be- ing accessible w hofiel guests, not a bad idea to ascertain what these privileges will cost you if anything. We know of one resort where the greens fees -c the local golf elub com- pared favori with the rate for room and bolrd -t the hotel. In other places charges for the use of tennis courts are far from 'nominal, and if one con- templates intensive tennis phylng she must figure on spending a fair sized sum for her sport. BEAUTY CHATS New hats! Some of them are terrible, some rather nice. Beware of the exag- gerated lihes and stick to the simplest styles and you'll be sure of having some- thing becoming. For the new hats have ricty and irregularity of outline, they are still simple (let's hope that the old fashion of fancily mmmea hats never | skin. returns!) they are mostly felt, and zhey come in the most lovely soft shades. This is no fashion article. I've had a peep at some advance styles and love them. There's a tendency to get hats back from the face and down the neck, which suits a certain tall, exotic type of woman marvelously. It gives her all the dignity that wearing her hair parted and pulled back and colled on her neck would give. There are hats that are cut back to one side of the forehead and come in & curious line across the face and out over the ears, rather like hair parted lt the side. These are sophisti- cated ‘and only for the woman who wants to look very smart and doesn’t ‘mind looking 25 or more, ‘The brimless mu are becoming if the profile is you llmsc them. it yml are in years or if your skin g:mn But | time. NANCY PAGE Hostess Served First, but Who Comes Last? BY FLORENCE LA GANKE. Nancy and Peter were dining out. ‘They had been invited to the.home of the Laceys. “Do you suppose the children will be there?” ““Mercy, no Peter! Mrs. Lacey knows that grown-up dinner parties ‘are not for children. They will have had their dinners before we urrive snd will.be safely out of the way. At least,” she added, “I know Mrs. Lacey hopes the: will be out of the way.” 5 ” And they were. Mrs. Lacey’s new maid was serving. Nancy watched her with interest. She had heard some tales about this wait- ress, and smiled to herself to see how quickly Mrs. ane{ had taught her, “Why, do you know, when she came to me she thought the man of the house should be served first. And after he had his dinner, then she thought all the women should come next and that I should be last of all.” At the dinner Helga, the maid, served the hostess first. m she passed food to the woman guests of honor. After that the guests were served in the order in which they were seated about the table. The host was served last. Had the guest of honor been highly distin- ’ui.shed and especially had she been rom Europe, Mrs. Lacey would have instructed Helga to serve her first. In this country, however, we consider the hostess sets the social pattern, and is therefore served first. ‘The maid was careful to stand at the left of the guests, so that they could help themselves easily from proffered | ™ food. The serving dishes were held in CLOSING HOURS FOR CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS 11 p.m. dey before publication. For Sunday., 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Few women vacationists are sanguine enough to expect saddle horses will be provided for them gratis, or that canoes or boats will be free for the taking. Still rates on those facilities vary widely. too, and it is well to know rates in advance.
