ZONING CHANGES - Trade Board Committee Ap- proves Fire Stations in ¢ Residential Areas, A change in-the zoning regulations of the District which would permit the placing of fire stations, public play- grounds, public recreation centers and public swimming pools in residential areas was approved by the zoning com- mittee of the Board of Trade at a meet- ing yesterday afternoon. | " 'The committee, however, in consider~ ing the amendment to the zoning codé i &s proj by the Zoning Commission, declined to approve the suggested plac- ing of police stations in residential | zones. It was specified also that any fire sta- tions placed in restricted residential areas should be of an architectural de- sign which would not detract from the | Police Stations Excepted. In opposing the placing of police pre- cinct stations in residential areas the committee took the pcsition that since police deal with crime, the location of a police building adjoining a residence would unnecessarily deteriorate property values. It was suggested that police | stations could be located in commercial | and industrial areas witheut handicap- ' ping police work. { "The COmT‘“tce took the view that | since fire stations, playgrounds and pub- | lic swimming pools are necessary public | conveniences which should be located in | residential centers, the Commissioners | % should have the right to place them there even though some injury was done in individual cases, if such acts were for the general good of the community | | as & whole. | Reference was made to the declara- | tions of George S. Watson, chief en- ! gineer of the Fire Department, that {fire engines located in stations on | streets having street car lines often are | delayed in getting to fires due to traffic | conditions, and that this was the rea- | son of the necessity to place them on ;resldenual thoroughfares | Commitiee Members Present. Harry Blake, acting chairman of the committee, presided. Others present included Ben T. Webster, sécretary of | the Board of Trade, who is president of the Washington Real Estate Board; Arthur Carr and Joseph B. Bowling. The action was taken in response to the request of the office of the Zoning Commission for views on the proposed amendment to the zoning code. Mr. Bowling was_delegated to present the | views of the Board of Trade committee | to city officials at a joint. meeting of representatives of civic groups on this | question. | | T0 HOLD OPEN HOUSE. | Falls Church Woman's Club Plan- ning for Fete, ‘ FALLS CHURCH.
