Attractions in Washington Theaters COLUMBIA—"“Evangeline.” Dolores Del Rio, one of the most in- teresting personalities of the screen and one of the world’s handsomest women, comes to Loew’s Columbia, in person, starting Saturday, in oonjuncuon with her latest p!cture “Evangeline.” This the first t Miss Del Rio has ever ap) nd be(ore the public in ‘Washington. Miss Del Rio will appear both in t.hg picture and in person four times “Evangel \lne is an adaptation of unr(elhws classic poem of the Aca- dians, who were driven from thelr native home and transplanted in strange places to begin life anew. The men of the village are taken by the British on the day of Evangeline's bethrothal to one of the youths of the village. In the confusion of embarking for foreign ports she and her betrothed are separated. She spends years look- ing for him and several times is close on his trail, but destiny seems to pre- vent them from meeting. Finally, while nursing the sick, she finds him an old and broken man. She sings for him the songs of their old days and he dies in_her arms. ‘The picture is notable for its beauti- ful scenic effects, its musical score and the singing of Miss Del Rio and the en- tire village. Usual hmxu features will augment the showing of the Flcture and the per- sonal appearance o 1 Rio. EARLE—"The Wheel of Life.” Richard Dix dressed up in natty unl- forms and wearing a mustache will be seen in “The Wheel of Life,” which wmu to the Earle Theater for one week, ing with the Friday mid- nl‘ht premlen, th!s week. “The Wheel of Life” is Paramount's picturization at a play by James Ber- nard Fagan which ran two seasons in London. It is & romantic drama whose setting is a British military post in India, where Dix, as the dashing cap- tain of the t, falls in love with the beautiful of his superior officer. The pair forswear their romance, however, for the honor of the regiment, but later they meet during an engage- ment with wild mountain tribesmen, and love is rekindled. The climax is said to be one of the most amazing in_the history of dramatics. Esther Ralston will be seen in the feminine lead, and O. P. Heggie as a fatherly colonel, who never suspects the clandestine romance. ‘The picture was directed by Victor Schertzinger, the man who made “For- gotten Faces,” “Redskin” and “Nothing But the Truth.” FOX—“Behind That Curtain.” Earl Derr Biggers' mystery novel, “Be- hind That Curtain,” comes to the Fox next week in a Fox Movietone talking picture. Warner Baxter, Lois Moran and Gilbert Emery are the featured players. Mr. Baxter will be remem- bered as the “Cisco Kid” in “In Old Arizona.” The story concerns a girl, niece of a man of wealth, rank and power, who, defying the will of her proud uncle, married a man of questionable charac- ter. Scotland Yard, the great English detective bureau, very much interested in the groom, was ever alert on his trail and was thwarted on one occasion when one of its chief men was slain mysteri- ously while investigating the matter. ‘The whole world was stirred by this daring deed. A trail of circumstances leads from London to India, thence to San Francisco, and through it all the persistent, relentless pursuit of the mur- deml- li: intertwined with a most un- usual love story. John Irving Pisher will be featured in a Midsummer stage revue as mas- ter of caremnn\u, with a long list of en~ s !'oxatnn" offer individual novelties. tone News also will be an important Zfeature. PALACE—“Divorce Made Easy.” Douglas MacLean, Marie Prevost and Johnny Arthur will be featured at Loew's m-ee m a week, beginning Saturday, in the talking comedy, “Di- vorce Made Buy‘" a vehicle that is sald to enable MacLean to make people Warner Bros’ Vitaphcne production, that it is to be held as the screen at- traction for another week. The story concerns a company of stranded troupers who, while their amusing adventures go on, are nlaying a musical fantasy known as “The Phan- tom Lover.” The cast includes Betty Compson, Arthur Lake, Sally O'Nell, Joe E. Brown, Louise Fazenda, Ethel Waters, William Bakewell, Fairbanks Twins, Sam Hardy, Lee Moran, Wheeler Oak- man, Harry Bribbon, Thomas Jefferson, the Harmony Emperors’ Quartet and & dancing beauty chorus of 100. ‘The story is by Humphrey Pearson, the scenario by Rabert Lord, and Alan Crosland directed the picture. Grant Clarke and Harry Akst wrote the words and music, and the dance and stage presentations are by Larry Ceballos. TWO 0ZONE BANDS BELIEVED TO EXIST Both Hover Over Northern Hemi- sphere, Smithsonian Ob- server Declares. By the Associated Press. Two slender bands of ozone, hover- ing between 18 and 31 miles above sea level, are belleved to exist over the Northern Hemisphere. F. E. Fowle, assistant in the astro- physical observatory of the Smithsonian Institution, accounting for phenomena encountered in studying solar radiation, has evolved an explanation pointing to separate existence and origin. of the bands. Ozone is a super-oxygen and gener- ally formed in a thunderstorm by elec- trical discharges when it gives a pecu- liar, fresh odor to the atmosphere. One layer, long held to encircle the entire earth with a faint, blue shroud and cheating it of a part of the sun's radiation, is due to ultra-violet light from the sun which transforms oxygen of the alr into its unstable form of ozone. The other band, Fowle believes, is formed by the bombardment of elec- trical particles projected under great velocity from the sun. The winged energy, striking the oxygen in the upper reaches of the air, changes it to ozone that is positively charged, He arrived at his conclusions in ex- plaining varied results in obsevations originally made for determining the radiation emitted from the sun. Values taken at the Smithsonian station on Table Mountain, California, and those at Montezuma, Chile, showed that in both hemispheres the maximum amounts of ozone occur in the Spring and the minimum in the Fall. In the Northern Hemisphere a marked relationship exists between the ozone and sun-spot numbers. When the sun- spots are at a minimum, the layer formed by bombardment is practically absent. No such rtlationship, however, is noted in the Southern atmosphere. Mr. Fowle answers the variation in the two hemispheres by pointing out that the second band of ozone in the North is formed of positively elcctrified rticles which are deflected toward e earth's North Pole. His conclusions are substantiated by students of terrestrial magnetism who ascribe phenomena in thelr fleld to two quantities of ozone formed by two sep- arate agencies. Hasta Manana. ARGARET GRANT'S poise had a restful effect on her fellow passengers when she entered the dining car. The nervous little woman with the fretful baby relaxed somewhat as Margaret sat down beside her. Richard Adams, across the aisle, unpuckered his fore- caustic criticism he was about to ad- dress to the ebony attendant about the length of time it took to broil a steak. Two children being piloted out stopped instinctively to smile up in the brown friendliness of her eyes and were start- ed again on their way by impatient parents. ‘The nervous little voice of the ner- vous little woman rasped out a com- monplace and was answered by Mar- garet’s velvety contralto, which made Richard Adams smooth the last faint wrinkle from between his eyes and sigh contentedly. She did not notice the extreme de- liberation which enabled him to ish just as she rose from the tlbl:. and the keen look which followed her bronze head would have been lost on her if the train had not given & sudden lurch just as she reached the door. Some one of the line waiting in the vestibule had loosened the catch that held the door, and only a quick brown hand thrust against it prevent- ed it slamming on Margaret’s fingers as she regained her balance. “Oh thank you,” frankly looking up into a pair of surprisingly blue eyes, which would have been stern if they had not been crinkled at the corners by the action of the sun without and a sense of humor within. She felt his strong steady her for & neces- sary moment and only that. “Making up time, I guess, and none too smooth a roadbed to do 1t on,” she heard above the roar of the train as they crossed the space between the two cars, with its flimsy accordion- like cover. Then he seemed to draw into himself with a reserve equal to her | own. His seat proved to be opposite hers in the Pullman. She sat quite motionless, entertain- ing herself with mental pictures of the end of the journey, & sure-enough holiday in California, after a year of exacting hospital duty, following her graduation. The doctors whose opin- jon made it flattering, insisted on having her as their “special” when they could. Now she had only Jack's eager face before her and she blew him an airy radio kiss, though her hands remained idly clasped in her lap, hands whose every firm curve said, “let me help you. She was barely conscious of the man opposite, though she had taken a nurse’s satisfaction in the ease with which he had swung his heavy Glad- stone bag up before him and when he burrowed for the book which now ab- ior‘bed hémmsloor Jackl Never ;vfll" ut 5o del r an she had to love him tr?fl = marry him when he was bm.er.
