32 BEDTIME STORIE Mrs. Bob Keeps Her Nerve, *Tis mother love. you will observe, That keeps the best control of nerve. Z-0ld Mother Nature. Of course, there were others besides Peter Rabbit interested in the secret of the Bob Whites. Reddy Fox and Mrs. Reddy and clever Old Granny Fox knew that somewhere the Bob Whites had a nest. So all three of them were interested, though not as interested now as they would be when there was a ONE MORNING. family. Nevertheless, they always kept a watchful eye on Bob whenever they happened to\ be where he was, hoping that he might, without meaning to, give away that preclous secret. “It isn’t worth spending much time hunting for now,” said Reddy Fox to himself one morning, as he saw Bob sitting on his favorite fence post. “If I should find the nest I would only get Mrs. Bob and some eggs. I would much rather have a lot of young Bob Whites. Then it would be worth while.” Nevertheless, Reddy looked sharply on all sides, hoping that he might chance to discover where that nest was. Of course, he used that wonderful nose of his. That nose tells him more, much more, than his eyes. I don't know BY THORNTON W. BURGESS what Reddy would do without that wonderful nose. So he poked it into bunches of grass and sniffed under bushes and followed little paths of Danny Meadow Mouse with it and alto- gether learned a very great deal. But he didn’t learn where that nest of Mrs. Bob's was. Finally Reddy sat down. That big, bushy tail o(“hllls was -e‘gtunuy partly crushing the little covered passageway that led to Mrs. Bob's nest. And there on her nest sat Mrs. Bob. Yes, sir, there on her nest sat Mrs. Bob. Not so much as a feather moved. She knew all about the quickness of Reddy’s eyes. She knew all about the keenness of Reddy's ears, She knew all about Reddy’s wonderful nose. And so she sat perfectly still. 3 “It is the only thing for me to do, thought Mrs. Bob. “If I should move even the tiniest bit, those eyes of his, which are always watching for move- ment, might see it. I might rustle a straw and those wonderful ears of his would be sure to hear it and I would be almost sure to give off some scent and that wonderful nose of his would cauv.lch it. So I must keep perfectly still.” So Mrs., Bob kept perfectly still. There sat Reddy Fox so near her that his tail almost rested on her and he didn’t have the slightest idea that she was anywhere near. Now, it took a great deal of nerve to do such a thing. Mrs. Bob knew that she could spring into the air and fly to safety, but that would mean giving away her precious secret. ‘That would mean that Reidy would find those precious . She couldn’t allow him to do that. So, though it frightened her dreadfully— though her heart went pit-a-pat, pit-a- pat until she feared Reddy would hear it—she remained right where she was. It seemed to her that Reddy Fox sat there for hours and hours. He didn't. It really was only a few minutes that he sat there. But there are times when a few minutes can seem like hours, and this was one of those times for Mrs. Bob. Not until he was well on his way did Mrs. Bob White move. Then, with a little sigh of relief, she shook out her fea and shifted her position on the nest. It had been a strain. It had been a very great strain. But once again it had proved to her the value of keeping perfectly still. (Copyright, 1929.) The Daily Cross-Word Puzzle Across. 69. . Ungulate mammal of South Amer- ica. 71 . Beam. .
