It was a day or two after Peter Rab- bit's talk with Dipper the Grebe that Peter for the first time saw him fly. He came from the direction of the Big River and alighted in the Smiling Pool. He alighted right in front of where| Peter was sitting. “Hello, Dipper!” exclaimed Peter. “I #“WHAT DO YOU MEAN,” HE ASKED W. BURGESS “Because,” replied Dipper, “there is hardly room here in the Smiling Pool to get into the air. Of course, I could have done it, but it was easier to swim down to the Big River, where there is plenty of room.” Peter thought this over for a few minutes. He scratched his long ears with his long hindfeet, as is his way when he is puzzled. “What do you mean,” he asked at last, “by saying there is hardly room?” “Just that,” replied Dipper. “You see, I have to sort of get going on the water before I can get up speed enough to get into the air.” “Can't you jump right up into the air from the water?” demanded Peter. “Mr. Black Duck can. I've seen him Sweethearts on Parade. Mot and jump from the water and I've seen him jump from the land.” “I'm not a Duck,” Dipper reminded Peter. “I couldn't get up in the air from the land at all.” “What!” cried Peter in astonishment. “It's a fact,” declared Dipper. “That is one reason I do not go on land. On land I am nearly helpless. I couldn’t get into the air to save my life. Any one could catch me there.” “Pooh!” said Peter. “I wouldn't want wings like l.ho!,s! I don't see that they are very much use to you, excepting when you are traveling.” “Don’t you?” inquired Dipper pleas- antly. “Just watch me now.” Dipper dived, and from his position on the bank. looking down into the water, Peter could see him under water. AT LAST, “BY SAYING THERE IS | He saw something that astonished him. HARDLY ROOM?” saw you flying. That is the first time I have ever seen you in the air. My, you travel fast!" “That's what these narrow wings are for,” replied Dipper. “Narrow wings are usually the fastest wings.” Oh,” sald Peter, “I didn't know that.” “Then you have learned something,” replied Dipper. “And did you fly down to the Big River?” asked Peter. “No,"” replied Dipper. the Laughing Brook.” “I swam down “Why didn't you fly down there?” Peter inquired. . In a moment he bobbed up on the other side of the Smiling Pool and then swam back to where Peter was. “Do you swim with your wings?” de- manded Peter. Dipper chuckled. “I use them sometimes when I am in a_hurry,” said he. “They help a lot when I want to catch a fish. Now do you think they are such poor wings?” “No-0,” said Peter slowly. “I guess they are just what you need.” “I don’t guess; I know,” replied Dip- T o (Copyright, 1920.) 1 Fails to follow suit. 2.
