It was over at the Smiling Pool that Peter Rabbit received one greatest surprises of his life. Peter thought he knew all the water folk. Of course, he didn't. He didn’t begin to know all of them, because there are many, very many, who do not visit the Smiling Pool, or the pond of Paddy the Beaver, or even the Big River. But Peter knew Mr. and Mrs. Quack, Beauty the Wood Duck and Mrs. Wood Duck, Mr. and Mrs. Black Duck, Honker the b “I WONDER WHERE THAT YOUNG DUCK CAME FROM,” SAID PETER TO GRANDFATHER FROG. Goose and his flock, Teeter the Sand- piper, Rattles the Kingfisher, Longbill the Woodcock and Redwing the Black- bird, all of whom are found on or near the water. He saw all these feathered folk every Spi and some of them every Fall. So whenever he visited the Smiling Pool, the Laughing Brook or the pond of Paddy the Beaver, he ex- mted to see some one of these folk. re were tow others that he often saw too, and these were mn&m the Great Blue Heron and Qwack the Night Heron. BURGESS So perhaps you can imagine his sur- prise when one Spring morning, as he sat peeping out from behind a bunch of grass, to see a total stranger swim out from the Laughing Brook into the Smiling Pool. The stranger seemed to be very much at home on the water. It made no attempt to come ashore. gt t:‘rst Peter took it to be a half-grown uck. “I wonder where that young Duck came from,” said Peter to Grandfather Frog, who happened to be close by on a green lilypad. Grandfather Frog looked up. “I don't see any young Duck,” said he. “Then there must be something wrong with your eyes, Grandfather Frog,” declared Peter. “There he is swimming over where the Laughing Brook leaves the Smiling Pool.” “Ch 'Cl:xcll edl G%:d; Frog. “Chug-a-rum af doesn't look like a Duck to me. When did you ever see a Duck with a bill like that?” Peter looked very intently and s queer expression stole over his face. “I never have seen a Duck with a bill like that,” he confessed. ‘“Instead of being broad and flat, this fellow's bill is pointed. But he swims like a Duck and if it were not for that bill he would look like 8 Duck. Do you know who he is, Grandfather Frog?” Just then the stranger swam over until he was right under where Peter was sitting. ‘“‘Hello, Grandfather Frog!” said the stranger. “Hello, Dipper!” replied Grandfather “What are you doing here?” “Just looking around,” replied the stranger. Just then Peter Rabbit poked his head out from behind the grass. In the twinkling of an eye the stranger had disappeared. A “Forgery” in Prunes. ‘The statement is made that the American prune, subject of joke and Jjest, has been made the object of a counterfeit or forgery in the hands of some _unscrupulous persons_ abroad. California prunes are sent to Europe in rather large quantities and are much in favor, being purchased by many in pref- erence to their native fruit. To meet the demand without detriment to the European fruit, the American boxes, it is said, are repacked with indifferent fruit and merely topped with the Amer- ican article and sold as choice fruit from America.
