By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 16—A saucer- shaped wooden island, with engine, masts and sails, has been designed by Capt. Robert Bartlett, for nearly 30 years sea captain on the Arctic Ocean. He calls the craft the “skimmer ship.” It is a vessel unsuited for any of the seven seas, except the Arctic, but adapted to perform in that ocean func- tions unknown to other ships. It will carry 8 or 10 scientists for a 3 to 5 year cruises, all of them housed | on its roomy deck, open to light| throughout 6 months of day and for | observations during the long polar night. | This deck, 125 feet long and 45 wide, bears living quarters and laboratories and will rest only a foot above water. Its_horizontal level is expected scarcely | to be disturbed if pressure squeezes the | ship up on the ice, for the keel is only 12 feet below deck and the bottom nearly flat. The craft is elongated like a salad dish. Plans Drift Over Ice. From Alaska Capt. Bartlett wants to drift northward over the pole, sending daily weather observations by wireless to Washington. With meteorological | balloons aloft, wires and cables down for water and salinity tests and sonic depthfinder in action, he would measure the polor elements from two miles above the surface of the sea to two miles below, the maximum known depth of Arctic midocean. He would”take mag- | netic observations, tidal and current readings and make special experiments fl with the gyro compass. The drift over the pole in the direc- tion of Europe, says Capt. Bartlett, has been established by wreckage, but Arctic lore is blank as to speed of this current. The polar Viking would like to take small planes to range the adjacent seas. At times, he says, there are perfect fly- ing days atop the world—sky cloudless and not & ripple of wind for hours. 37 " NOVEL. CRAFT TO “SKIM” OVER ICE FIELDS The “skimmer ship” above has been designed by Capt. Robert Bartlett (inset) to be used in an attempt to float over the North Pole.
