THE EVENING “STAR, WASHINGTO D. C, THURSDAY, “BUDDY" UPHOLDS COMRADE' LA Long-Sought Corporal Found as Witness in Support of War Decoration. By the Associated Press ABERDEEN, Wash., May 16.—The | “missing” corporal who will vouch for | the authenticity of a story concernind®a | spectacular war-time feat by Lewis J.| C. Poppe of New Bremen, Ohio, has| been found. Poppe. who is seeking a Distinguished | Service Cross, has only to write to John Lea in Aberdeen to obtain confirma- | tion of his genuine tale of capturing, | single handed and unarmed, Max | Christowitz and 16 other German sol- | diers during the Argonne-Meuse offen- | sive in October, 1918. ! Joht Lea, Poppe’s former corporal, | for wiiom the New Bremen man has been searching, is working in an Aber- deen mill. He' learned that Poppe was | endeavoring to locate him when he | read an Associated Press story telling | of the World War feat and Poppe’s bid | for the service cross. Tells Story 8t Marvelous Feat. | “The day before Poppe’s marvelous performance,” related Lea, “we had gone over the top near the Ramounge- | Lammerence road. In our outfit 250 | had gone over and that pight only 65 were left. I was the corporal of the squad which contained Poppe. During | the day we had captured a German | officer. “When the offensive was over for the time being we were left on an outpost and didn't know where to get water. ‘The German officer told us where wa- ter could be found and Poppe volun- teered to go out after it. I had to get permission from the captain to let Poppe go. | “The location of the water was in dangerous territory. I finally got the | permission _from the captain, whose | name was Boyd. I don't remember his first name and I don't know where he is. “Poppe was suffering from gas at the time. In order to handle the bulky | Backs Up “Buddy” JOHN LEA. started out after the water. Poppe | got lost and stumbled upon a detach- | ment of cut-off Germans. ! “Max_Christochowitz was on_sentry | duty. Poppe, blufting, warned Christo- | chowitz that a detachment of Ameri- | cans was with him and the Germans | surrendered without question. Poppe | picked up a rifle from <he battlefieid | and herded the Germans back to the | American trenches. Find Germans in Shell Holes. ‘During the drive there were several gangs of Germans who were cut off and waiting in shell holes to be cap- tured, but our squad was the outpost of a wedge driven decp in German ter- ritory and we were surrounded by the enemy on three sides. The 17 Ger- mans captured by Poppe were belliger- | ent and were not waiting to be taken. “It was only Poppe’s magnificent | bluff that saved his life and made prisoners of the Germans.” Poppe and Christochowitz later met again in an American hospital and be- came good friends. After the armi- stice the men corresponded and last January the German came to the United States and with the assistance of Poppe obtained a position as an ac- countant in Lima, Ohio. Poppe has the support of Christo- chowitz to his claim of a Distinguished Service Cross, while the Lima and New Bremen Posts of the American Legion have authenticated the American's record. Lea was identified as a corporal in Company D, 16th Regiment, by W. H. Sampson, manager of the Aberdeen mill, who was in the same division in the Argonne region. MRS. M’CULLY CITIZEN.
