Vesta Battery Co STOCKS IN RALLY AS CREDIT EASES Markgt Reverses Early| Downward Trend When Money Rate Drops. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, May 16.—Convulsive price movements characterized today's stock market, which opened irregular, turned weak before the end of the first hour, rallied briskly in the early after- noon and then turned irregular again at the close. The closing was steady, with the active issues showing about an even distribution of gains and losses and the weakness of a few high-priced industrial _specialties offset by the strength of a number of public utility, business appliance, automobile accessory and tobacco shares. Fears of an increase in the New York Federal Reserve rediscount rate, which accounted for some of the early selling, again proved to be unfounded, as the rate was announced as unchanged at z ?er cent after the close of the mar- et. Violent gyrations in call money ac- counted for much of the market's unsettlement. The renewal rate of 14 per cent scarcely had been posted be- fore bankers were offering funds on the outside below that figure. The rate dropped successively to 12, 10 and 8, per cent as the supply of funds attracted by the high opening rate in- creased in volume. The wide fluctuations in money rates aroused widespread ecriticism among brokers and stock traders, who were at a loss to understand why 14 per cent should be charged on loans at 10:30 am. and then have funds go begging less than two hours later at 10 per cent. Price movements were mixed at the opening. Packard Motors opened with a block of 10,000 shares at 149, off 15, and Crosley Radio, International Com- bustion and Granby Copper dropped a point or more. Burroughs Adding Ma- chine jumped 73 points on the first sale, and Frank G. Shattuck crossed 153 to a new high record. Hayes Body opened with a block of 8,000 shares at 65, up 1. Packard, which had a sharp rise yesterday on buying influenced by the successful flight of an airplane equip- ped with its new Diesel oil-burning motor, extended its loss to 2, points in the first hour. United Corporation, which sold as high as 75! last Satur- day, fell back to 66, duplicating the low price since it was listed on the “big board.” Grant Stores quickly broke 5 points, National Cash Register 312, Wright and McCall Corporation 215 each, General Electric 2 and American Can, Nash, Simmons, West- inghouse Electric, American Power & Light and Fox dropped a point or more.
