They made one stop for fuel at Jacksonville, Fla. The trip south was made last Thurs- day, the plane taking off here at 4:20 am, and arriving at Havana, 1,233 miles distant, at 5:30 pm. Gibbs, chief signal. officer, | that three laboratories maintained by | the corps here be removed to Fort Mon- | mouth, N. J., where their activitles can be incorporated under a single manage- ment. About 20 officers and men, resi- dents of Washington and vicinity, will be affected. Gen. Gibbs said the reduction in scop2 of research work which followed the World War left the laboratories scattered, with the radio unit in the Bureau of Standards Building, the elec- trical branch in a building at Vir- ginia ayvenue and Nineteenth street, and the meteorological laboratory in the Munitions Building. ‘The general believes the concentration will reduce overhead expenses by elimi- nating overlapping activities, and work a 50 per cent increase in efficiency. The new unit will be housed temporarily at Fort Monmouth, pending erection of a modern laboratory there, as contemplat- ed under the Army building program. The main object of the laboratory work carried on by the Signal Corps is to design and produce new types of communication’ equipment for the Army, including radio sets suitable for transport by men in the field, pack ani- mals and vehicles, as well as various sorts of telephone and telegraph field equipment. ‘Work of removing the lab- Gen.
