Professing ignorance of police regu- lations which require motorists to ob- tain permits before operating machines, | Mrs. Elizabeth F. Harrison, 63 years old, of the 1300 block of Fern street, was granted & continuance of her trial | today in order to obtain the license. Arrested by Patrolman R. V. Sinclair of the Traffic Bureau, Saturday night, Mrs. Harrison was arraigned in Traffic Court today before Judge John P. Mec- Mahon on a charge of driving without a permit. According to_the testimony of the defendant, she had resided in | Washington for only two months and | thought that registration cards and i- cense plates authorized her to operate. Although halted for a minor infrac- tion of traffic regulations, Mrs. Har- rison was only charged with one of- fense and Judge McMahon ordered the case continued until Friday to allow her to get a permit. A charge of second offense speeding was preferred against Harry E. Shipley | of Takoma Park, Md. following his arrest Saturday night by Officer Sin- clair, but a charge of first offense was substituted in Police Court today. | Arrested by Officer J. D. Markham on December 30, Shipley forfeited $10 in Police Court when he failed to appear on a speeding charge. .Although an at- tachment was issued the man had not been apprehended. Judge McMahon declared that al- though Shipley had been arrested for E ng on & previous occasion, he could not be charged as he had not been convicted. However, he imposed a fine of $10 on the first complaint and $15 on the present charge. INJURIES PROVE FATAL. Alexandria Laundry Man Dies/ From Numerous Hurts. ALEXANDRIA, Va.. April 15.—Wil- liam Williams, one of the owners of the Alexandria Laundry. Inc. 1210 Queen street, died at the Alexandria Hospital this morning at 10:30 o'clock as the re- sult of injuries received at the laundry Friday afternoon, when he was caught in a pulley and hurled against the ceil- ing. He suffered a fractured spinal col- umn, dislocated shoulder and right fore- arm, cuts and bruises.
