FINANCIAL! [URB STOCKS QUIET N TRADING SLUMP Market Marks Time—Few “Bpecialties Advance After Early Reaction. BY HARRY H. BECKER. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, Avril 15.—In one of the Quietest sessions this year, prices fluctu- ated indifferently on the Curb Exchange today. Volume fell off sharply and ex- cept for a mild wave of selling early in the session, there was nothing to indi- cate a change in speculative sentiment. A few stocks stood out for special rea- sons, while there was a fair display of strength in the ofls and several utilities. There was another sharp upward spurt in Arcturus Radio Tube, following last week’s buoyancy. It rose to a new high record and was one of the most active performers. Continental Dia- mond, a comparatively unknown spe- cialty, also displayed striking strength “at & new peak above 30. Stocks like Goldman Sachs Trading, Zenith Radio, Newton Steel, Newberry, Aviation Cor- gontlon and one or two others also roke away from the general hesitancy and were at different times actively ad- vanced, but the gains were modified or entirely cancelled by later profit taking. New York Transit featured the oil division, climbing several points at the outset on expected favorable develop- ments, the nature of which could not ? A&scert;oi?ei 3“ better sentiment to- petroleum shares generally had a steadying influence on- their prices. Stocks like Humble, Standard of In- , diana, Imperial of Canada old and Vacuum received good support. - The early reaction was characterized by professional experiments on the short side to uncover vulnerable spots. Some success in this direction was accom- plished in the case of General Cable warrants, U. S. & Foreign Power pre- ferred and Southeastern Power. Budd Manufacturing sold off follow- ing announcement of a special stock- holders' meeting May 24 to approve an increase in the common stock from 300,~ 000 shares to 1,000,000 without par value. Babcock & Wilson was unaffect- ed by the report for 1928 showing net profit slightly less than before and declaration of a final dividend of 8 per cent, making 15 per cent for the year, the same as was paid in 1927. News that Club Aluminum has perfected a new radio receiving set made no impres- sion on the stock. Among the specialties Ford of Canada new continued reactionary. ‘Clgptn were dull and somewhat lower the aviation stocks simply drifted. I Baltimore Markets | @pecial Dispatch to The Star. With a larger attendance than ever before the annual play given recently by the people of little Grasmere, Eng- 1and, to keep alive the local dialect, was the most successful of any produced. Students of folklore from many parts of the country attended. CHICAGO, April 15.— Substanial fresh upturns in wheat values. took place early today, owing, for the most part, to buying based on farm legisia- tion prospects. Some of the buying was credited to foreigners. Opening at % off to % up, wheat prices later scored & decided general advance. Corn, oats and provisions also displayed high -'na'“hm 'z&'m M er al sul juently > tional gains. Advances today in the price of wheat here were in the face of setbacks in Liverpoo! quotations, whereas upturns there were expected. Washington news about probable action which Congress would take relative to farm relief con- tinued to receive the lion's share of traders’ attention in Chicago. During much of the time, offerings were light and were confined mostly to periods when price bulges were in progress. Relative weakness of the Liverpool wheat market was ascribed to some in- crease of the stock of wheat on hand there. At the same time, however, the amount of wheat on ocean passage showed a material decrease, the total afloat being 65,296,000 bushels, com- pared with 69,592,000 bushels a week 2go and 68,268,000 last year. PARIS BOURSE PRICES. PARIS, April 15 (#).—Prices were easy on the Bourse today. Three per cent rentes, 73 francs 40 centimes. POR' ), Ore.—Strong demand for softwodd lumber continues thtxxfih- out the Pacific Northwest. Unfilled orders are high, the total for the West Coast and Southern pine mills together amounting to 1,126,228,000 feet. Of this amount 840,927,000 feet was re- ported from West Coast mills. Fish. BILOXI, Miss.—The oyster reefs of the Mississippi Sound were closed today by the Mississippi Oyster Commission of May, as is usual. This was done because of the enormous of young oysters on some reefs and the depletion of others. Drugs. BOSTON.—Sales of drugs, cosmetics and toilet articles are somewhat lo~er than they were earlier this year, put are still well above those of & ago. There is every indication that sales will continue at a high level for some months to come. MARCH EXPORTS. March exports from the United States were $486,000,000 and imports $383,000,000, leaving a favorable bal- ance of trade for the United States on | car the month of $103,000,000. NEW YORK, April 15.—Cotton opened steady today at an advance of'1 to § big | Points on buying which apparently was inspired by reports of rains in the Eastern belt. The precipitation reported scemed to have been light at most points, however. Liverpool was lower- than due on the New York close of Saturday and the under liquidation, combined with some New Orleans and Southern selling. By the end of the first half hour July was off to 19.95 and December {o 19.97, with the general market showing net declines of 4 to 6 points. Private cables said there had been covering and some Bombay buying in Liverpool supplied by liquidation, and also that reports from Manchester were discouraging, with a poor demand for cotton cloths, Baltimore Grain Exports. BALTIMORE, April 15 (Special).— Grain exports last week as reported by the Maritime Exchange were 786,163 bushels, of which 425,963 bushels were wheat and 360,200 barley.
