The use of service airplanes for dis- aster rellef will be ‘demonstrated by the Army Air Corps, in co-operaticn | with the American Red Cross, at Boll- ing Field at 2:30 o'clock, Wednesday, April 24. The demonstration will be held as a preliminary to & disaster-pre- redness meeting 1o be held by the R:d Cross that night. The program tentatively arranged by the Alr Corps calls for 15 minutes of formation flying, followed by 16 minutes of acrobatics by pursuit pilots. This may include the breaking of target balloons by pursuit planes. There will be a demonstration of the usefulness of the airplane in relief work, which will include signaling to the airplanes from the ground and vice versa, using the Army code: picking up a written message from the ground by airplane; dropping food, clothing and medical packages from planes by means of small parachutes, and picking u{tm- jured from the field and transporting them by airplane ambulance or trans- port plane, The Army signal code, adopted by the American Red Cross as standard for plane-to-ground and ground-to-plane communication in connection with re- lief operations, was used effectively in the Vermont -floods of last year and the Alabama floods of last month. LITTLE ROCK, Ark, April 15— With emergency relief work completed and permanent rehabilitation the next step, Red Cross workers are continuing a survey of the North Central Arkansas communities stricken Wednesday night by “twin tornadoes” which took a toll of 50 lives, injured hundreds -and left (Tom ‘ch"!" a tlzmlnn‘\x d homeless and estitute. Property damage was expect- ed by Red Cross officials to run between $1,000,000 and $1,500,000. Headquarters for relief and rehabili- tation work by the Red Cross have been established at Newport, Estimates are that it would require from six to eight weeks to give the refugees their start in life again, Swifton, affected the worst, has buried its 23 dead and has 12 injured in & Newport Hospital. The Red Cross has distributed tents, cots and other sup- plies over the storm-leveled communi- ties of Sneed and Possum Trot and will direct the work of rebuilding frame farm houses. At Guion, where five were killed and 48 injured, a tented city has been built and several hundred refugees are being cared for. Members of the Arkansas National Guard at Batesville were in charge of a community kitchen. Guion, a mining community, was completely destroyed.
