Features for Women MISS. FRANCES ‘VIRGINIA WAGGAMAN, Diughter’of Mr.and Mrs. Ennalls-Waggaman, subdebutante. President and Mrs. Hoover Head Distinguished Guests Listed For Entertainment Metropolitan Opera Co. Offers the Special Attrac- tion—Leading Society Events of Week, Past and Prospective. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. MONG the many interesting events which await the President | and Mrs. Hoover this'week is their attendance together Thurs- day night when the most important members of official and resident society will gather at Poli’s Theater to hear the Metropolitan Opera Co., and. their presence at the opening of the base ball season in Washington Tuesday afternoon when the Presi- dent will throw out the first ball. Mrs. Hoover will be present at the opening opera Wednesday evening, occupying the White House | box and will have guests with her. MANY interesting things come into the life of the First Lady of the Land that are not of a strictly social nature and almost every day there are guests entertained informally at luncheon, little teas when she meets guests by appointment and then important delegations are constantly passing through the White House to meet her. This week she will receive the delegates to the annual Congress of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolu- tion, an organization of which she is a member and to which the| President’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Theodore Hoover, is State regent of California. Last week Mrs. Hoover received the Daughters of !‘uu)latd;rs and Patriots and this week many other such engagements await her. UT with all of her other duties, Mrs. Hoover maintains her buoy- ancy and freedom to a far greater extent than have most other ladies of the White House in past years. She attended a tea at the American Association of University Women last week, there being no guests outside the club membership. She has for some years belonged to the club_and has many times before been a qnen there. ‘When the Senate Ladies Lunch Club resumes its weekly luncheons Tuesday, April 23, Mrs. Hoover is likely to be a guest. E were queer quirks in society all along the line last week, the President borrowing the luncheon party intact fln'anfed by Sec- retary Mellon for Friday, in honor of Senor Don Pablo Ramirez, minister of finance of Chile, and setting them down host and all in the state dining room at the White House. Then Thursday evening the dinner which the Ambassador of Great Britain and Lady Isabella Howard gave was minus its guest of honor, Archbishop Curley of Baltimore, who had canceled all social engagements on account of mourning. A V‘ERY few of the Senators’ wives are omitting receptions or teas for the State re(fent and delegates from the States their hus- bands represent, and one of the most interesting will be that given at the Willard Friday for the Michigan delegation and Mrs. Bros- seau by Mrs. Arthur H. Vandenburg. Many of -the State societies also are entertaining for those from their States attending the Con- tinental Congress of the D. A. R., which cpens tomorrow, and the Massachusetts Society will have the Secretary of the Navy and Mrs. Adams as guests at their reception. UITE the most lively social event in connection with the D. A. R. A< Congress is the ball at the Willard given by the president’gen- eral and national board of management for the several hundred pages attending the delegations. Trumbull of Connecticut, and Mrs. Trumbull, who with Miss Bina Day Deneen is page to Mrs. Brosseau, the retiring president gen- eral, are conspicuous members of this group and there is.an abidin; President Hoover Is Listed to Attend‘ Metropolitan Opera Wdl Accompany First Lady Thursday Evening if Na- tional Affairs Permit.
