Women Threw Bombshell Into Chefoo Industry. “Chefoo, China, recently seized by revolutionists, is a city made famous by ‘fickle fashion,’” says a bulletin from headquarters of the National Geo- graphic Soclety. “The Germans started the hairnet industry on a lerge scale, but the World War in Europe and cheap hair and cheap labor in Asia caused the industry to migrate to the Shantung Province, with Chefoo as headquarters. “Although American women's money paid the wages of thousands of women and girls in and near Chefoo when the hairnet industry was flourishing, per- haps few of those American women could locate Chefoo on a map without considerable searching. The city lies on the north shore of the ‘Cape Cod’ of China, which extends into the Yellow Sea from the main portion of Shantung Province_toward the middle section of Korea. If a line were drawn due west = | from Cincinnati, Ohio, through Denver, Colo., and continued across the Pacific/ Chefoo would be one of the first Chin- | ese cities the line would touch. “Chefoo now ranks third among Shantung cities, with about 100.000 in- habitants. A large foreign settlement, with modern hotels, consular office buildings and residences bordering wide, occuples a knob of land on the north. “The adjoining Chinese quarter is congested. Narrow streets, winding through this portion of the town. are lined with squatty buildings, mostly of flimsy construction. but it is here that Chefoo bristles with business activity throughout the day. "Stoop-shouldered coolies from neigh- borhood farms and villages trudge to - | the market place under loads nearly as large as those atop mules and donkeys. Ofher coolies tug at the handles of load- |»d Shantung wheelbarrows whose wheels are sometimes 3 feet high. There is little room in the lanelike thorough- fares for anything else, nevertheless the “|ricksha bov draws his fares at high speed, often forcing pedestrians to side- step into children-filled doorways for safety. “Through the Chefoo streets all the products for export from the Chefoo neighborhood are ‘carried to waiting cargo boats “in the harbor. Apples, sweet potatoes, peanuts. wheat, cotton, corn. tobaceo, pongee silk and hair nets are transported by vessels flying the flags of many nations. Cargoes for Chinese consumption are loaded on coastwise boats that make Chefoo a port of call. Junks that lazily float about in the harbor pick up short-haul * | shipping. Pongee silk and peanuts are i- | among the more important Chefoo ex- ports. The latter were introduced in Shantung by an American missionary. “Chefoo was classed as one of the unwalled, therefore unimportant, com- munities of China before 1862 when the port was opened to.foreign shipping. Later a large portion of Shantung ship- ping passed through Chefoo and the city enjoyed & period of prosperity: until 1904, when the Shantung Railroad was completed and the port was forced to share commerce with ports the rail- road touched. “Another shock came when the Tient- sin-Pukow Railroad was completed in 1912, Tsingtao, a port on the southern coast of ‘Cape Cod,’ succeeded in get- ting railway connections, while Chefoo got only a promise of a connection. As a result Tsingtao gradually outgrew its The nearest rail- way station to Chefoo now is 200 miles to the southwest, between which busses frequently run over a government-owned highway. “Fickle fashion threw a bombshell into Chefoo industry when it decreed bobbed locks for American women. When the industry was at its height $5,000,000 worth of hair nets were shipped from Chefoo annually; a ma- jority were sold in the United States. Two years later the value of hair net exportation dropped . to slightly more than $2,000,000. Seventeen thousand women and girls in and near Chefoo made hair nets in 1921; now only a few thousand are employed in the industry.” SUMMER EOT'I‘AG!!. J. Catts Surrenders to U. S. Mar-| shal—Refuses to Dis- cuss Case. By the Associated Press. MARIANNA, Fla, April 13.—Former Gov. Sidney J. Catts yesterday surren- dered to his grandson, a United States commisfioner here, and made bond of $17,500 on charges of aiding and abet- ting an alleged counterfeiting ring. Florida’s war-time governor and a Baptist minisier came here from his home at Defuniak Springs, and went to the office of United States Deputy Mar- shal B. G. Stanley, who escorted him to the office of Commissioner W. H. Milton, where bond was posted. Catis appeared in the best of spirits | and confident that he would be vin- dicated when his case is called for trial at the next term of court. The former governor said he had nothing to say at this time for publication about the | matter. Catts was indicted recently by a Fed- erad grand jury at Jacksonville on’| charges of having furnished $5,000 to an alleged counterfeiting ring, said to have been headed by Julian Diaz, Tampa attorney. The former governor was to receive $25,000 in spurious bills on his investment, the indictment says. Buena Vista Spring Hotel Buena Vista Springs, Franklin Co., Pa. INMAN IS GRANTED DIVORCE AT REN Wife Is Given Annual Allow- ance of $15,000 for Five- Year Period. By the Associsted Press. RENO, Nev, April 13.—Walker P. Inman, wealthy New York and Atlanta ian, today won his fight for a diverce from Mrs. Helene Garnet Patton In- man, daughter of a Kokomo, Ind, clergyman. A jury early this morning returned a verdict in favor of Inman, who charged that his wife abandoned herself to liquor and other men. Mrs. Inman contested the divorce and asked that she be given the decree and $250,000 alimony. Under the ver- dict Mrs. Inman will receive an annual allowanée of $15,000 for five years. This was in accordance with a separation agreement made two years ago. Escapades Are Related. ‘The decision, which came after six hours of deliberation, brought to an end three weeks of sensational testimony, during which Inman, a son of Mrs. James B. Duke, widow of the tobacco magnate, produced several witnesses who tzsflfled to his wif@s participation RESOR’I‘S BUY A LOT A a utx £_AND BO¥ Boney bHess Hig Rt Call J. M.
