Many Important Functions Of Recent Days Challenge Interest in Society World Presidentand Mrs. Hoover's Reception to Foreign .Envoys Most Noteworthy Event—Cabinet Ladies Exchanging Visits. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. ANY diversions engaged society last week besides watching the President’s family adjust itself to life in the White House, an old but ever new story to Washington—old because for more than a hundred years the change has been made every four or eight years, and new because no two families ever do it just alike. Weddings closed the week socially, and there were dinner parties and | luncheons of more than usual size and interest each day. | Tm! is very little unnecessary formality about the President and | Mrs. Hoover in settling in their new abode, and, indeed, they are | doing it so comfortably and naturally that one might think of them | as always having belonged there. The reception to the heads of | foreign missions Monday afternoon was the first and largest affair | there of the week: and following out the form and ceremony observed | for the diplomatic and other state dinners, the guests were ranged | in line so the President and Mrs. Hoover had only to pass along and Pave each guest presented according to rank. | MRS. JULES JAMES, Wife of Comdr. James and nicce of the Secretary of State, designate, and Mrs. Stimson. * ‘Underwood. TH‘E dean of the corps, Sir Esme Howard, Ambassador of GrealE Britain, and Lady Isabella Howard stood with the Secretary of | State and Mrs. Kellogg at the head af the line, with the Ambassadors, Ministers and charge d’affaires and their ladies placed according to . rank. The President and Mrs. Hoover joined their guests in the state dining room for tea. Mrs. Hoover has received groups of guests by special appointment several times during the week and yesterday, accompanied by one of the White House staff of aides, attended the | wedding of Miss Eleanor Wilson and Mr. Bethuel M. Webster, jr., in| St. John'’s Church, on Lafayette Square. | W the country, who have either lingered on following the inaugura- tion or have come to see how the new administration adjusts itself, had many opportunities of observing the First Lady of the Land and : ogners of her family during the week at the Amaryllis Show and on | the streets near the White House. There have been many children | in the mansion since it was built, but no others have ever attracted | more attention or been more winsome than Peggy Ann and Herbert‘ C. Hoover, 2d, the grandchildren of the President and Mrs. Hoover. | Whenever they went abroad or presented themselves in sight of the | many who haunt the White House for a glimpse of the family, they were watched with delighted interest. | General and Special Notes Cabinet and Congress Circles Passed in Review.
